Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico Riserva “Sergio Zenato” 2009 by Zenato Winery
Zenato only release their riserva in exceptional years, and 2009 was rated by us as no less than a five-star vintage, with perfect winter-to-spring weather and managing to overcome a slightly overhot summer to produce wines of exceptional heft, refreshing acidity and real ageability and class. A must-have for fans of the classics.
Assemblage: Corvina 80%, rondinella 10%, oseleta and croatina 10%.
Winemaking: Hand-harvesting of carefully selected bunches is followed by a full 4 months of appassimento. A slow fermentation of 15-20 days on the skins following crushing, after which the wine is aged for at least 4 years in large-format oak botti and at least a year in bottle before release.
Alcohol: 16,5%
Colour: Solid ruby red, tending towards garnet.
Aroma: Intense fruit-forward style, depths of raisins and amarena, with edges of cedar wood and black spice.
Palate: Full-structured, with ample softness and subtlety, and marked by a balancing freshness. Astonishingly well integrated for a wine of such size.
Ageing: This one has decades in it yet.
