Vintage 2019
Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
An excellent year. A cold, wet spring, then a hot summer and a harvest right on time.
A cold, wet spring and a hot summer, with a harvest close to the average date.
After a warm, dry March, April and May were the coldest and wettest in 30 years. The summer was very hot, with heat waves at the end of June, peaking at 38°C, and at the end of July, plus some local hail. The spring rain carried the vines through a dry June. Veraison came late, ending in the last week of August; then good swings between day and night brought sound ripening and picking from mid September, a week later than in 2018. A quiet year for vine disease.
Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico Riserva “Calcarole” 2019 by Guerrieri Rizzardi
Produced only in outstanding vintages and in limited quantities, the Calcarole Amarone Riserva showcases the character of its exceptional vineyard. Situated in Negrar, within the heart of Valpolicella Classica, the site benefits from a warm microclimate, rocky terraces, and a south-western exposure that ensures optimal ripening conditions.
This 2017 vintage combines depth and elegance, bringing together 70% Corvina, 10% Barbera, 10% Rondinella, 7% Sangiovese, and 3% Corvinone. The grapes undergo traditional drying (appassimento) for three months, concentrating flavors before a slow fermentation process in steel tanks. The wine then matures for 12 months in barriques and an additional 24 months in large oak casks, contributing to its refined structure and longevity.
In the glass, dark ruby hues introduce a layered nose of spiced black cherry, dried roses, cloves, and forest floor. The palate is rich yet fresh, unfolding with velvety red and black fruit, hints of balsamic herbs, and a mineral edge. The finely woven tannins and bright acidity create a balanced, long-lasting finish, with a touch of raspberry adding vibrancy to the final impression.
Highly regarded by critics, the 2017 Calcarole Riserva has received 93 points from Falstaff and 92 points from James Suckling.

Guerrieri Rizzardi is a historic, family-run winery with origins dating back to the 15th century. The estate brings together the legacies of two noble families who played a key role in the development of winemaking in the Veneto region. With vineyards across Valpolicella, Bardolino, and Soave, the winery produces estate-grown wines that reflect the diverse terroirs of these classic regions.
For centuries, the estate has evolved from mixed agriculture to a dedicated focus on viticulture, emphasizing the relationship between soil, climate, and grape variety. The vineyards are planted with both traditional and international grapes, carefully chosen based on soil composition and microclimate. Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Barbera, and Sangiovese form the foundation of the Valpolicella wines, while Bardolino and Soave bring in additional varietal diversity. The estate follows sustainable vineyard practices, with precise pruning and yield control to maintain quality.
Grapes are vinified in three separate cellars, one in each region, to ensure minimal transport and preserve freshness. The winery was among the first in Italy to apply the "Cru" concept, highlighting the significance of individual vineyard sites in defining quality. Over the years, the Rizzardi family has balanced tradition with innovation, expanding their vineyards while maintaining full control over the production process, from vine to bottle.
Beyond winemaking, Guerrieri Rizzardi has also developed a strong presence in hospitality and tourism. Historic sites such as Villa Rizzardi and the renowned Pojega Garden in Valpolicella are part of the estate, offering visitors a connection to the winery’s long history. Today, the family continues to refine their approach, blending generations of expertise with modern techniques to create wines that reflect both their heritage and the land they cultivate.
