Vintage 2017
Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
A very good year. Hot and dry, with an early harvest of sweet, deeply coloured grapes.
A hot, dry year with an early harvest and grapes rich in sugar and colour.
Little rain fell from the winter onward. Late frost in April damaged a small area near San Martino Buon Albergo. June to August were hot, at times with drought and some sunburn in mid June. Hail in late August and early September, mostly in Valpantena and the east, hurt quality rather than quantity. Corvina was picked in the first week of September, about ten days earlier than in 2016, with high sugar, low malic acid and very good colour potential. The heat kept most diseases away.
“Heletto” by Garbole
“Heletto” by Garbole is a powerful and unconventional Rosso Veneto IGP that reflects the winery’s philosophy of independence and stylistic freedom. Produced from Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella, with careful manual harvesting and partial appassimento, it represents a bold interpretation of the Valpolicella territory outside traditional appellation constraints. The result is a wine of remarkable concentration and personality, often seen as a bridge between a structured red and an Amarone inspired style.
In the glass it shows a deep and impenetrable ruby red color. The aromatic profile is intense and layered, with ripe cherries, plums and black cherry jam supported by balsamic nuances and fresh hints of mint. Ageing in American oak barrels contributes further depth with notes of vanilla, coffee, chocolate and licorice, adding richness and aromatic complexity.
On the palate, Heletto is full bodied, powerful and enveloping, with a velvety texture and well integrated tannins. Lively acidity maintains balance and freshness despite its concentration, leading to a long and persistent finish. With 14% alcohol, it delivers depth and structure while preserving elegance and drinkability. It pairs beautifully with red meat, game, braised dishes and aged cheeses, and offers solid ageing potential in bottle.

Garbole is a small, independent wine estate founded in 1994 by brothers Ettore and Filippo Finetto. It is based in Tregnago, in the Valle d’Illasi area of the province of Verona, between Soave and Valpolicella.
The Finetto brothers define Garbole through a clear and personal approach: working as growers and winemakers with full control over decisions in the vineyard and cellar, and aiming for continuous improvement year after year. Their communication and materials emphasize independence and creative freedom, with a strong focus on red wines made in their own style and at their own pace.
Garbole has opened a dedicated direct sales, visit, and tasting location at its new site in San Zeno di Colognola ai Colli (VR), at Via Ceriani, 31. Visits and tastings are available by appointment only.
Among the best known labels of the estate are L’Hurlo, Hatteso, and Heletto, wines that reflect Garbole’s commitment to concentration, structure, and long ageing, shaped by a strongly individual identity.
