Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
An outstanding year. Plenty of sun, healthy grapes and a record harvest for Amarone.
A spectacular harvest: growers were delighted and grape prices ran above average.
A dry winter and a warm, sunny spring brought flowering forward. Below average rain fell just when the vines were most stressed, so picking started about ten days early on healthy, beautiful grapes. Swings between day and night temperatures gave superb ripening, with sugar about two degrees above average. Loose bunches with tough skins went to dry in record quantities, 100,000 to 120,000 quintals. Hail on 28 June damaged about 400 of the area's 5,000 hectares around Negrar and Verona.
Amarone della Valpolicella DOC Classico “Mazzano” by Masi Cantina Privata Boscaini
The Boscaini family’s private cellars hold a rare and treasured collection of fine wines, only produced in the finest years and in limited quantities, which they are proud to share with those who appreciate Masi’s exceptional offerings. Among their prized offerings is the Mazzano wine, a true symbol of Amarone. This austere and stately wine hails from the historic Mazzano vineyard, known for its high-quality produce since the 12th century, and is made from grapes that are carefully laid out to dry in traditional lofts during the winter months.
The vineyard’s ideal orientation and altitude, along with its fertile hummus-rich limestone soil, impart a distinct personality to the grapes and the wine they produce. The natural drying process concentrates the grapes’ flavors and aromas, while the wine’s austerity is complemented by soft tannins and a velvety elegance.
Masi, in the 1950s, was a trailblazer, introducing the concept of “single vineyard” to Italy and solidifying their reputation as a company dedicated to showcasing the unique characteristics of the Valpolicella region’s terroir. Their Amarone and Recioto wines, sourced from the region’s renowned cru vineyards, are the epitome of this commitment, offering not only a window into the region’s exceptional land but also possessing distinct styles and recognizable traits, making them a true reflection of the region’s rich winemaking heritage.

Masi Winery has its roots in the Valpolicella Classica hills of northeastern Italy, an area with varied soils and microclimates. The Boscaini family purchased their first plot, called โVaio dei Masi,โ in 1772 and has continued to cultivate grapes like Corvina, Rondinella, Molinara, and the rediscovered Oseleta. A key element of production is the Appassimento method, in which grapes are dried for at least 100 days to create Amarone, Recioto, and double-fermentation styles such as Ripasso.
The company has expanded into multiple areas, Veneto, Friuli, Trentino, Tuscany, and Argentina, always emphasizing local grape varieties. Guided by the Masi Technical Group, ongoing research merges long-held methods with modern practices. The new headquarters, โMonteleone21,โ sits mostly below ground beneath vines and stone walls, evoking the look of traditional terraces. Inside, a 12-meter-high space is reserved for drying grapes, as well as a spacious zone with a wine shop, bar, and restaurant.
Monteleone21 places strong focus on renewable resources, with geothermal and photovoltaic systems that minimize energy use. These efforts earned recognition in the Best of Wine Tourism competition organized by Great Wine Capitals and the Verona Chamber of Commerce.
Through the Masi Foundation, the winery supports cultural and educational initiatives, including the Masi Prize, which honors individuals who enrich wine-related customs. Today, Masi wines reach about 140 countries, showing a passion for each stage of production and respect for local origins and traditions.
