Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
An excellent year. A cold, wet spring, then a hot summer and a harvest right on time.
A cold, wet spring and a hot summer, with a harvest close to the average date.
After a warm, dry March, April and May were the coldest and wettest in 30 years. The summer was very hot, with heat waves at the end of June, peaking at 38°C, and at the end of July, plus some local hail. The spring rain carried the vines through a dry June. Veraison came late, ending in the last week of August; then good swings between day and night brought sound ripening and picking from mid September, a week later than in 2018. A quiet year for vine disease.
Recioto della Valpolicella DOCG Classico “Stella” by Monte Santoccio
Born in the hills of Fumane, at the heart of Valpolicella, “Stella” reflects the long-standing winemaking tradition of this region. Made from Corvina (40%), Corvinone (30%), Rondinella (25%), and Molinara (5%), this Passito Rosso carries the distinct character of Valpolicella’s native varieties. With an alcohol level of 6%, it offers balance, freshness, and gentle richness.
The grapes are handpicked at full ripeness and left to slightly overripe before being placed in small wooden crates. They rest in the drying loft until late February, slowly concentrating flavors and aromas.
Vinification unfolds in two stages. The first is a 30-day cold pre-maceration, extracting color and aroma. This is followed by a long, gentle fermentation lasting nearly a month at a controlled temperature of no more than 18°C. The wine then rests for 24 months in 500-liter French oak barrels, gaining depth and refinement.
In the glass, “Stella” displays an intense garnet color. The aroma opens with notes of dried plum, bitter almond, and subtle balsamic hints. On the palate, it is balanced and graceful, with delicate sweetness and a lingering finish of spice and fruit.
“Stella” is best enjoyed slowly, paired with mature cheeses, fruit preserves, or game dishes. This Passito Rosso captures the beauty of Valpolicella’s vineyards through patience, precision, and respect for the land.

Nicola Ferrari is carrying forward a vision of winemaking where oversight of every step – from vine to cellar – ensures both quality and reputation. After spending years as cellarman under the legendary Bepi Quintarelli, Nicola established Monte Santoccio in Fumane, at the heart of Valpolicella Classica. Together with his wife Laura, he tends about three hectares of vineyards on the scenic Monte Santoccio hill, growing the region’s native varieties such as Corvina, Corvinone, Molinara, and Rondinella.
Each vintage relies exclusively on grapes from these estate vineyards, with annual production around 14,000 bottles. The wines, shaped by rigorous vineyard care and a focus on the land’s unique qualities, reflect an authentic expression of Valpolicella. Nicola’s meticulous approach stems from a deep knowledge of the local terroir – from soil studies and environmental conditions to carefully selecting vines and nurturing the most prized clusters. The result is a line of wines that celebrates both tradition and a clear, direct connection to this historic region.
