Description

Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico 2019 “Rhetico” by Bolla

The Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico 2018 “Rhetico” by Bolla is inspired by the ancient Venetian deity Reitia, symbolizing abundance and prosperity. This wine reflects the rich history and expertise of Valpolicella winemaking, offering a bold and refined interpretation of Amarone.

Winemaking Process
The 2018 “Rhetico” is crafted from a blend of 75% Corvina and Corvinone and 25% Rondinella. The grapes are hand-harvested in multiple stages to ensure only the finest clusters are selected. The drying process, conducted at 450 meters above sea level in Torbe di Negrar, reduces the grapes’ weight by 30–35%, intensifying their sugar and flavor concentration.

Fermentation begins in January, several months after harvest, allowing the dried grapes to develop their rich profile. This process includes careful temperature control and extended maceration, resulting in a wine that balances fruit-forward aromas with soft tannins. The aging process involves 36 months in oak barrels, with part of the wine maturing for 18 months in French barriques. A final refinement in the bottle ensures its balance and complexity.

Flavor Profile
This Amarone has a deep ruby color with garnet reflections. Its aromas are layered with notes of dried fruit, raisins, jam, and warm spices, complemented by balsamic undertones. On the palate, it is smooth and harmonious, offering flavors of fruit preserves, subtle spices, and a lingering touch of toasted almond.

Recommended Pairings
The “Rhetico” pairs well with roasted meats, braised dishes, and game, as well as aged cheeses. It also complements richly flavored pasta and risotto. Serve at 18°C in a large glass, such as a Ballon, to fully appreciate its aromatic depth and structure.

Details
With an alcohol content of 15.5% and a yield of less than 40% from the initial grape weight, this Amarone exemplifies meticulous attention to detail. It is a refined choice for those seeking a wine that celebrates Valpolicella’s traditions while offering a bold, approachable profile.

About Bolla

Founded in 1883 by Alberto Bolla , the winery soon gained recognition when he began supplying local white wine to taverns in Soave, then expanded to Verona and Venice, where the family opened a restaurant in 1902. In the 1930s, Alberto’s oldest son Giorgio, an oenologist, drove a shift toward high-quality red wines, prompting the creation of the Pedemonte site in Valpolicella Classica . This facility produced Recioto, Valpolicella, and later Amarone, alongside the well-regarded Soave from the original cellar.

In the 1940s, Valpolicella was already known for appassimento wines, especially the sweet yet balanced Recioto. Occasionally, complete fermentation produced a dry outcome known as Amarone, which Alberto Bolla privately kept in what he called the Nonno cellar. Realizing its potential, Giorgio released the first “Amarone del Nonno” in 1950 as a special birthday gesture for Alberto. That bottling paved the way for Amarone’s global reputation as one of Verona’s most prized reds.

In 2006, Gruppo Italiano Vini purchased Bolla Winery to uphold the family’s emphasis on quality-driven processes, enthusiasm for winemaking, and respect for local growing areas.

Today, the estate encompasses over 300 hectares of vineyards in Valpolicella Classica, the Soave zone, and the Lake Garda region. A network of about 100 grape-growing families, collaborating across three generations, remains crucial in shaping wines that balance time-honoured methods with changing tastes.
