Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
A very good year. Warm weather, plenty of water and a balanced harvest.
A warm year with good water reserves, balanced ripening and a slightly early harvest.
Spring was cold at first, then warm, with repeated spells of cold air and a lot of rain in the hills. Early summer was cool and unstable; from late July it turned hot, with local storms. Strong storms in early September caused local damage, with landslides and flooding in some vineyards. Harvest began on 10 September, four days ahead of the average, with good sugar, balanced acidity and heavier berries thanks to plenty of water.
Valpolicella Doc Classico Superiore “San Michele” by Tenute Ugolini
The Valpolicella Doc Classico Superiore “San Michele” by Tenute Ugolini captures the elegance and depth of the region, echoing Federico Fellini’s sentiment that “A good wine is like a good movie: it lasts a mere moment and leaves a taste of glory.” Sourced from the Vigna Colle San Michele vineyard, situated 200 meters above sea level, the vines span 3.87 hectares, framed by the traditional “marogne,” the region’s characteristic dry stone walls. The tufaceous soil provides an ideal foundation for red wines that develop complexity over time.
From 16-year-old vines cultivated using the Veronese vertical-trellis system, with a planting density of 6,250 plants per hectare, this wine is a blend of Corvina Gentile, Corvina Grossa, Rondinella, and Oseleta grapes. Following pressing and fermentation, the wine matures for at least 24 months in barrique and tonneau barrels. This careful ageing process enhances its structure and aromatic depth, producing 70 quintals per hectare.
Harvested in October, the wine has a drawing-off percentage of 15% and an alcohol content of 14.5%. With a total acidity of 5.46 g/l, a dry extract of 27.9 g/l, and a pH level of 3.52, it presents itself in a striking ruby red hue. The aroma blends red and Marasca cherries with subtle hints of cocoa, nutmeg, and vanilla.
For the best expression of its flavors, it is recommended to open the bottle one hour in advance and serve it in balloon glasses at a temperature of 15-18°C. It pairs well with medium-aged cheeses, cured meats, hearty pasta dishes, and oily fish such as eel, sardines, and anchovies.
The alpolicella Doc Classico Superiore “San Michele” by Tenute Ugolini offers an outstanding drinking experience with a longevity of 15-20 years. Each sip provides a lasting impression, reflecting the care and tradition behind its creation.

Ugolini Winery is deeply connected to the Valle di Fumane, where each vineyard reflects a commitment to organic farming and respect for the land. The estate focuses on single-vineyard wines that highlight the distinct characteristics of their specific crus: Pozzetto Valpolicella Classico, San Michele Valpolicella Classico Superiore, and Valle Alta Amarone della Valpolicella.
Pozzetto: A Wine of Identity
Pozzetto represents tradition and simplicity, a wine crafted to be shared among family and friends. Sourced from the historic vineyard of the same name at 160 meters above sea level, it remains true to its roots, foregoing the Appassimento method or wood aging. The result is a balanced and lively expression of fruit, embodying the authenticity of the Valle di Fumane.
San Michele: The Well-Tempered Corvina
Situated on the slopes of Colle San Michele at 200 meters above sea level, this vineyard benefits from a tuff-rich soil and meticulously maintained terraces. By selecting only the finest grapes, the wine achieves an elegant structure, with depth and complexity balanced by bright freshness. It is a refined expression of Corvina, offering a long and precise finish.
Valle Alta: Strength and Balance
At 256 meters above sea level, the vineyard of Valle Alta thrives on a foundation of limestone and clay. The southeastern exposure provides a vital acidity that enhances the longevity of the wine. The grapes undergo a careful drying process, adding layers of depth while maintaining poise. The result is an Amarone with remarkable finesse, where every nuance is in harmony.
Limited Production Wines: A Rare Privilege
Ugolini produces two exclusive wines in small quantities, Valle Lena Recioto della Valpolicella and San Michele della Chiesa Valpolicella Classico Superiore. These wines reflect the pursuit of refinement, where patience and craftsmanship yield extraordinary results.
Organic Farming: The Strength of Deep Roots
Ugolini's commitment to organic viticulture is evident in the way the vineyards have adapted over time. By limiting external interventions, the vines have developed deep root systems, reaching 50 centimeters below the surface, where a stable temperature of 15°C allows for optimal growth. This natural resilience fosters balance in the vines, resulting in wines that truly reflect their place of origin.
Villa San Michele: A Historic Setting for Wine and Culture
Once an agricultural residence for the Abbey of San Zeno Maggiore and later an Austrian officers’ home, Villa San Michele is a place where history and winemaking intersect. Each room within the villa offers a unique atmosphere for wine tastings:
The Map Room showcases artistic cartography and the landscape of Valle di Fumane.
The Blue Room carries the legacy of Milan and Venice, symbolizing its Habsburg past.
The Red Room connects wine with music, where opera performances enhance the tasting experience.
The Historic Kitchen is a tribute to medieval traditions, reflecting the estate’s agricultural origins.
The Ivory Room serves as an exhibition space for Ugolini’s award-winning wines, blending modern refinement with the rustic charm of wood and stone.
Ugolini Winery brings together tradition, sustainability, and a deep understanding of the land, ensuring that every bottle tells a story of Valpolicella Classica.
