Valpolicella DOC Classico Superiore by Tenuta Santa Maria Valverde
Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Alta Valpolicella, Marano, the Valpolicella DOC Superiore Classico from Tenuta Santa Maria Valverde is a testament to Veneto’s rich winemaking heritage. This red wine, hailing from the historic Valgatara sub-cru, elegantly captures the unique character of the region.
Vineyard and Vines: The vineyard, situated 250 meters above sea level, thrives on limestone and clay soil, imbued with morainic rocks. The vines—a blend of 30% Corvina, 20% Corvinone, 30% Rondinella, 5% Molinara, and 15% Oseleta—are meticulously grown on traditional pergolas. Dating back to the Napoleonic “sommarioni,” each vine produces 1.5 kg of grapes, embodying a legacy of excellence.
Harvest and Winemaking: Harvesting in late September involves careful hand selection of the grape bunches. The winemaking process adheres to traditional Valpolicella methods, featuring soft pressing and maceration. Indigenous yeasts drive the slow, natural fermentation in controlled-temperature steel vats over 15 days, incorporating daily pumping over and three delestages. This is followed by natural malolactic fermentation and aging in 500-liter French oak tonneaux.
Maturation and Bottling: A year in tonneaux and another in the bottle refine this Classico, resulting in a limited annual production of 4,000 numbered bottles. Each 750 ml bottle encapsulates the distinctive qualities and longevity of this exceptional wine.
Sensory Experience: The wine exhibits a rich ruby red hue with violet reflections, showcasing intensity and persistence. Aromatically, it offers a blend of red fruits, raspberry, and green pepper from the Molinara grape, complemented by intense violet, plum, blackberry, blueberry, cherry, and jam notes. Tertiary aromas include caramel, toast, and vanilla. The palate reveals a complexity that mirrors the nose, adding spices and a savory finish with mineral and black pepper nuances.
Ideal Pairings: This Valpolicella Superiore pairs wonderfully with a variety of dishes, from spicy soups and pasta with beans to meat and slightly aged cheeses, showcasing its versatility.
Longevity and Service: Stored properly at 14° to 16° C and shielded from light, the wine retains its qualities for 9-12 years. Serving at 16° C enhances its full flavor profile.
Eco-Conscious Production: Reflecting a commitment to sustainability, the wine boasts an ecological footprint of 1.04 CFP CO2/kg.
The Valpolicella DOC Classico Superiore from Tenuta Santa Maria Valverde is more than a wine; it’s a celebration of the Valpolicella region’s history and the artistry of Italian winemaking, offering an unforgettable experience with every sip.
