Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
An excellent year. A warm, early season and beautiful, healthy grapes.
One of the earliest seasons in years, with excellent grapes.
A very wet winter and a warm start brought early budbreak. A hot, very dry spring moved flowering about ten days ahead of the historical average. June and July were rainy, good for the growth of the bunches, and August was hot and dry. Picking started very early, from 5 September, almost without rain and with wide swings between day and night, ideal for ripening.
Bertani’s archive connects the successful harvest with a wine of considerable presence. Nick Jackson MW describes its Amarone Classico as ripe, dark and spicy, with concentrated fruit and powerful tannins defining the structure. Jackson found the wine tightly structured at the time of tasting, with its tannins and concentration taking precedence over immediate softness. Bertani classifies it as Esuberanza. The estate’s record lists 15.5% alcohol and 5.5 g/L residual sugar, with bottling in 2018, seven years after harvest.
Bertani (translated from Italian): "a harvest brought in under good conditions."
Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico by Bertani
If you were writing an entry for Amarone in the dictionary, you might as well put a picture of Bertani’s Amarone della Valpolicella Classico. If anything is the purest (and purist) expression of the style which has come to define Amarone, forceful but integrated, enormous but elegant, fruit-forward but subtle. If you want to know what Amarone is all about, this is as good a place to start as any – and for seasoned drinkers, as reliable and cheering as an old friend.
Winemaking: fermented with spontaneous wild yeasts. Grape drying takes place on bamboo mats for 120 days, with crushing and fermentation taking place in concrete, before barrel-ageing in large Slavonian oak botti for up to 7 years prior to release.
Assemblage: corvina veronese 80%, rondinella 20%.
Soil: calcareous, with some basalt.
Alcohol: 15%.
Colour: more red than true purple, but opaque.
Aroma: extremely characteristic red and black cherries, with a marked hazelnut edge and strong cinnamon and black pepper, not to mention touches of cocoa and light, bright coffee.
Palate: huge, juicy fruit, damson and cherry, but marvellously combined weight, smoothness and surprisingly refreshing acidity. Tannins beautifully structured but integrated, with sweeter oak spice balancing the more bitter cherry and coffee notes.
Ageability: one of those wines which is released with a bit of age on it already, this one is designed to last for years and years.
Pairing: richer stews of course, but has the elegance and freshness to stand up to more tomatoey dishes as well as the usual aged cheese (or, indeed, tipsy philosophising).

Bertani was founded in 1857 by Giovan Battista and Gaetano in the Valpantena region near Verona. From the beginning, they embraced advanced methods learned abroad while preserving local grape varieties, forging a style that balanced progress with tradition. Over time, the estate expanded into areas such as Valpolicella and Soave, emphasizing a consistent respect for the land and the character of native vines. Today, the winery continues to produce wines with a clear stylistic identity, guided by a philosophy that values the authentic qualities of each terroir.
One of the most recognized wines from Bertani is their Amarone della Valpolicella Classico. The process starts with a meticulous harvest of Corvina, Rondinella, and other traditional grapes at peak ripeness, followed by careful drying (appassimento) on racks for around 120 days. This draws out the natural sugars and aromatic compounds. After the drying period, the grapes receive a gentle pressing and slow fermentation in large oak casks, using approaches that highlight depth and refinement. Prolonged aging in the cellar then helps achieve layers of dark fruit, spices, and subtle herbal notes. The result stands as evidence of what can be attained through patience and respect for local conditions.
Bertani’s overall approach rests on careful choices, starting in the vineyard and continuing all the way to bottling. Non-intrusive ecological methods protect the biodiversity of their lands, and a blend of family knowledge with modern winemaking ensures consistency. Across more than 160 years, Bertani has remained faithful to creating balanced wines, prized for their capacity to develop over time.
With vineyards in sought-after districts of Valpolicella, Soave, and beyond, the winery has developed a range that highlights the distinction of each zone. Though Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is often seen as the pinnacle of this portfolio, Bertani also produces other Venetian appellations, reflecting a wish to illustrate the potential of local grape varieties. Through measured innovation and an enduring regard for tradition, Bertani holds a significant place in the Italian wine landscape.
