Description

Amarone della Valpolicella DOC Classico 1980 by Bertani

The 1980 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico by Bertani reflects a vintage shaped by steady conditions and a balanced growing season. Rainfall remained consistent with previous years, while warmer temperatures marked July and August, especially in early August, followed by a milder September. The harvest was slightly smaller than 1979, delivering good quality fruit with solid structure and balance.

Produced using the traditional appassimento method and aged extensively before bottling in February 1991, this Amarone follows Bertani’s classic philosophy of long maturation and gradual development.

In the glass, it shows an intense garnet red color with slightly orange reflections, a clear sign of its long evolution. The nose is mature and expressive, with notes of leather, dried plum, and walnut husk, offering a layered and distinctive aromatic profile.

On the palate, the wine is full and structured, with tannins that, while still present, are well integrated into the overall balance. The acidity is relatively soft, contributing to a round and composed mouthfeel. The wine still shows signs of development, with an elegant, persistent finish marked by subtle spice and depth.

This vintage may not reach the absolute peak of Bertani’s historical releases, but it stands out for its harmony, structure, and classic character, offering a refined and authentic expression of aged Amarone.

About Bertani

Bertani was founded in 1857 by Giovan Battista and Gaetano in the Valpantena region near Verona. From the beginning, they embraced advanced methods learned abroad while preserving local grape varieties, forging a style that balanced progress with tradition. Over time, the estate expanded into areas such as Valpolicella and Soave, emphasizing a consistent respect for the land and the character of native vines. Today, the winery continues to produce wines with a clear stylistic identity, guided by a philosophy that values the authentic qualities of each terroir.

One of the most recognized wines from Bertani is their Amarone della Valpolicella Classico. The process starts with a meticulous harvest of Corvina, Rondinella, and other traditional grapes at peak ripeness, followed by careful drying (appassimento) on racks for around 120 days. This draws out the natural sugars and aromatic compounds. After the drying period, the grapes receive a gentle pressing and slow fermentation in large oak casks, using approaches that highlight depth and refinement. Prolonged aging in the cellar then helps achieve layers of dark fruit, spices, and subtle herbal notes. The result stands as evidence of what can be attained through patience and respect for local conditions.

Bertani’s overall approach rests on careful choices, starting in the vineyard and continuing all the way to bottling. Non-intrusive ecological methods protect the biodiversity of their lands, and a blend of family knowledge with modern winemaking ensures consistency. Across more than 160 years, Bertani has remained faithful to creating balanced wines, prized for their capacity to develop over time.

With vineyards in sought-after districts of Valpolicella, Soave, and beyond, the winery has developed a range that highlights the distinction of each zone. Though Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is often seen as the pinnacle of this portfolio, Bertani also produces other Venetian appellations, reflecting a wish to illustrate the potential of local grape varieties. Through measured innovation and an enduring regard for tradition, Bertani holds a significant place in the Italian wine landscape.
