Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
A very good year. A rainy spring, then a hot, sunny summer.
A cold, rainy spring and then a hot summer; careful vineyard work gave excellent results.
March and the spring were wet and cool: May alone had 18 rainy days and 229 mm, delaying flowering by about ten days. July and August were fine and hot. Hail struck the Classico zone on 24 August. From late August through September, wide swings between day and night built rich colour and tannin, and picking began at the usual time, from 20 September, with only scattered rain.
Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico Riserva by Tommaso Bussola
Experience the grandeur of Tommaso Bussola’s Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico Riserva, a testament to the art of Italian winemaking. This exceptional wine, composed of 45% Corvina, 30% Corvinone, and 25% Rondinella grapes, exemplifies the rich viticultural heritage of Valpolicella.
Terroir & Vineyards:
Situated in the idyllic hills near Negrar di Valpolicella, the vineyards are perched at altitudes ranging from 280 to 450 meters above sea level. Here, the vines, aged between 35 to 70 years, are cultivated under the Pergola Veronese system, maintaining a density of 3300 vines per hectare. The vineyards’ South-East and South-West orientations ensure optimal sunlight, crucial for developing the grapes’ intense flavors.
Winemaking Excellence:
The creation of the Amarone Classico Riserva “TB” starts with careful grape selection in September. The grapes are then naturally dried for four months in a Fruttaio on wooden plateaux. Come January, the grapes undergo a second selection, pressing, and are placed in truncated cone steel vats. Indigenous yeasts initiate the fermentation, which is enriched over 50 days through careful pumping-overs and delestage. The wine is then transferred to steel tanks for settling, followed by aging in wooden barrels to perfection.
Extended Aging Process:
The Amarone Classico Riserva is aged for a total of 66 months, including 48 months in 5 Hl new tonneaux and 18 months in 25 Hl barrels. This extensive aging period endows the wine with a remarkable depth and complexity of flavors.
Bottling & Exclusivity:
After eight years of maturation, the Amarone Classico Riserva “TB” is bottled, then further aged for two years before being released. With a limited production of about 10,000 bottles, each one is a precious and exclusive offering in the realm of fine wines.

Tommaso Bussola began his work in winemaking in 1977, taking over his uncle Giuseppe’s small winery in Valpolicella Classica. With a sharp focus and a strong-willed approach, he initially followed local traditions, producing wines under the ‘BG’ label. Over time, he sought to refine his methods, leading to a turning point in 1983 when he personally selected the grapes for his first Amarone and Recioto.
A new phase began in the early 1990s with the construction of a new cellar and the use of barriques, allowing for a carefully managed aging process. This shift led to the creation of the ‘TB’ label, marking a commitment to precision and quality that is now recognized beyond Italy.
In 1995, Tommaso’s wife, Daniela, became an integral part of the winery, and in 2005, their sons, Paolo and Giuseppe, followed. Today, the family continues to uphold Valpolicella’s long-standing winemaking traditions while refining their approach with each vintage.
Winemaking Approach
Attention to detail begins in the vineyard, where grapes are picked by hand and carefully selected, from those destined for drying to those pressed immediately. The winery continuously works to refine its methods, adapting techniques in both the vineyard and cellar to bring out the best in each harvest.
Sustainability plays a key role in their philosophy, with natural methods used to maintain soil health and manage pests. By working closely with the land and respecting the natural balance of the vines, the Bussola family produces wines that reflect both their region and their commitment to continuous improvement.
