Description

Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico “Vigneto Alto” by Tommaso Bussola

Tommaso Bussola’s Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico “Vigneto Alto” is an exquisite expression of the Valpolicella region’s winemaking prowess. This distinguished wine is crafted from a blend of 45% Corvina, 30% Corvinone, and 25% Rondinella grapes, each contributing to its unique and rich character.

Terroir & Vineyard Excellence:
Originating from the esteemed “Vigneto Alto” vineyard in San Peretto di Negrar, this wine benefits from an altitude of 280 meters above sea level. The vineyard faces South-East, basking in the perfect amount of sunlight. The vines, impressively aged from 75 to 90 years, are cultivated under the Pergola Veronese system, with a density of 3300 vines per hectare, ensuring each grape’s quality and intensity.

Artisanal Winemaking:
The production of the Amarone Classico “Vigneto Alto” starts with a selective harvest in September. The grapes are then taken to the Fruttaio, where they are laid on wooden plateaux to dry naturally over four months. In January, these grapes are again selected and pressed in truncated cone oak vats. Fermentation begins with indigenous yeasts and is meticulously managed with multiple pumping-overs and delestage over 60 days. The wine is then transferred to steel tanks for settling, followed by aging in wooden barrels to achieve its full potential.

Profound Aging Process:
This Amarone undergoes an extensive 90-month aging process, beginning with 40 months in new 2.25 Hl barriques, followed by 50 months in 25 Hl barrels. This prolonged maturation period imbues the wine with unparalleled depth and complexity.

Bottling & Rarity:
After nine years of meticulous aging, the Amarone Classico “Vigneto Alto” is bottled and then further matured for two years before being released. With an annual production of just about 3,500 bottles, each one becomes a rare collector’s item, prized for its exclusivity and craftsmanship.

Tommaso Bussola’s Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico “Vigneto Alto” is more than a wine; it’s a celebration of history, tradition, and the art of fine winemaking, offering a sophisticated experience for the discerning connoisseur.

About Tommaso Bussola

Tommaso Bussola began his work in winemaking in 1977, taking over his uncle Giuseppe’s small winery in Valpolicella Classica. With a sharp focus and a strong-willed approach, he initially followed local traditions, producing wines under the ‘BG’ label. Over time, he sought to refine his methods, leading to a turning point in 1983 when he personally selected the grapes for his first Amarone and Recioto.

A new phase began in the early 1990s with the construction of a new cellar and the use of barriques, allowing for a carefully managed aging process. This shift led to the creation of the ‘TB’ label, marking a commitment to precision and quality that is now recognized beyond Italy.

In 1995, Tommaso’s wife, Daniela, became an integral part of the winery, and in 2005, their sons, Paolo and Giuseppe, followed. Today, the family continues to uphold Valpolicella’s long-standing winemaking traditions while refining their approach with each vintage.

Winemaking Approach

Attention to detail begins in the vineyard, where grapes are picked by hand and carefully selected, from those destined for drying to those pressed immediately. The winery continuously works to refine its methods, adapting techniques in both the vineyard and cellar to bring out the best in each harvest.

Sustainability plays a key role in their philosophy, with natural methods used to maintain soil health and manage pests. By working closely with the land and respecting the natural balance of the vines, the Bussola family produces wines that reflect both their region and their commitment to continuous improvement.
