Vintage 2020
Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
A very good year. A dry spring, then a very rainy summer; quality varied from area to area.
An uneven year: dry until flowering, then very wet, with a harvest that varied from area to area.
January to May was drier and slightly warmer than usual. June to August brought 575 mm of rain at San Pietro in Cariano and 461 mm at Illasi, against about 230 mm in a normal year, with some hail in June and August. Downy mildew pressed hard after the rains, luckily once fruit set was over; later, botrytis and rot needed care, helped by the September weather. Picking began around 13 September.
Valpolicella Ripasso Doc Classico Superiore “Cà del Laito” by Tommaso Bussola
Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore “Cà del Laito” is produced in the hills of Negrar di Valpolicella, where vineyards range from 280 to 450 meters above sea level with southeast and southwest exposures. The blend consists of 35% Corvina, 30% Corvinone, 30% Rondinella, and 5% Molinara, sourced from vines aged between 5 and 50 years. These vineyards are cultivated using the Pergola Veronese and Spalliera training systems, with a planting density of 6,000 vines per hectare.
Grapes are harvested by hand in early to mid-October and immediately fermented in stainless steel tanks with native yeasts after a short cold soak. Maceration lasts for about 15 days, during which daily pump-overs ensure optimal extraction of color and structure. The wine is then aged in steel tanks for six months before undergoing the ripasso method, a second fermentation on Amarone pomace that lasts about 15 days. This step enhances the wine’s depth and complexity, with frequent cap submersions to maximize contact with the skins. After settling, the wine moves into oak barrels for further refinement.
Aging takes place over 24 months in a mix of different barrel sizes, with 30% in 500-liter tonneaux, 25% in 225-liter barriques, and 45% in large 25-hectoliter oak casks. Following this period, the wine rests in the bottle for two months before release.
Deep ruby in color, this Valpolicella Ripasso offers aromas of ripe cherries, dried plums, and blackberries, layered with hints of spice, cocoa, and tobacco from its time in wood. The palate is structured yet smooth, with well-integrated tannins and a lingering finish rich in dark fruit and earthy undertones.
Best served at a temperature of 18 to 20 degrees Celsius, this wine pairs well with roasted meats, aged cheeses, and hearty pasta dishes. Production is limited to approximately 40,000 bottles per year.

Tommaso Bussola began his work in winemaking in 1977, taking over his uncle Giuseppe’s small winery in Valpolicella Classica. With a sharp focus and a strong-willed approach, he initially followed local traditions, producing wines under the ‘BG’ label. Over time, he sought to refine his methods, leading to a turning point in 1983 when he personally selected the grapes for his first Amarone and Recioto.
A new phase began in the early 1990s with the construction of a new cellar and the use of barriques, allowing for a carefully managed aging process. This shift led to the creation of the ‘TB’ label, marking a commitment to precision and quality that is now recognized beyond Italy.
In 1995, Tommaso’s wife, Daniela, became an integral part of the winery, and in 2005, their sons, Paolo and Giuseppe, followed. Today, the family continues to uphold Valpolicella’s long-standing winemaking traditions while refining their approach with each vintage.
Winemaking Approach
Attention to detail begins in the vineyard, where grapes are picked by hand and carefully selected, from those destined for drying to those pressed immediately. The winery continuously works to refine its methods, adapting techniques in both the vineyard and cellar to bring out the best in each harvest.
Sustainability plays a key role in their philosophy, with natural methods used to maintain soil health and manage pests. By working closely with the land and respecting the natural balance of the vines, the Bussola family produces wines that reflect both their region and their commitment to continuous improvement.
