Vintage 2017
Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
A very good year. Hot and dry, with an early harvest of sweet, deeply coloured grapes.
A hot, dry year with an early harvest and grapes rich in sugar and colour.
Little rain fell from the winter onward. Late frost in April damaged a small area near San Martino Buon Albergo. June to August were hot, at times with drought and some sunburn in mid June. Hail in late August and early September, mostly in Valpantena and the east, hurt quality rather than quantity. Corvina was picked in the first week of September, about ten days earlier than in 2016, with high sugar, low malic acid and very good colour potential. The heat kept most diseases away.
“L’Errante” Red Wine by Tommaso Bussola
Cultivated on the serene hills near Negrar di Valpolicella, L’Errante by Tommaso Bussola is a product of refined winemaking techniques and a commitment to quality. This red wine is crafted from a blend of 50% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from vines that vary in age from 15 to 50 years and thrive at an altitude of 450 meters above sea level.
The southeast and southwest-facing slopes capture ample sunlight, fostering the development of grapes that yield a deep, complex flavor profile. After harvesting, the grapes are naturally dried on wooden plateaux for three months, concentrating their flavors. The winemaking process involves careful pressing and fermentation in truncated cone steel vats, initiated with selected yeasts. This stage is followed by numerous pumping-overs and delestage to enhance skin contact and flavor extraction.
Aging L’Errante is an art of patience: 64 months in total, with the initial 40 months in new small barriques and the remaining 24 months in larger barrels. This extensive aging allows the wine to achieve a refined complexity and structure. Before release, the wine matures for an additional eight months in the bottle, ensuring its readiness for enjoyment.
L’Errante is a limited production, with about 3,000 bottles available. It is ideally served at a temperature of 18 to 20ยฐC (64.5 to 68ยฐF), making it a perfect complement to a variety of dishes or as a standout on its own.

Tommaso Bussola began his work in winemaking in 1977, taking over his uncle Giuseppeโs small winery in Valpolicella Classica. With a sharp focus and a strong-willed approach, he initially followed local traditions, producing wines under the โBGโ label. Over time, he sought to refine his methods, leading to a turning point in 1983 when he personally selected the grapes for his first Amarone and Recioto.
A new phase began in the early 1990s with the construction of a new cellar and the use of barriques, allowing for a carefully managed aging process. This shift led to the creation of the โTBโ label, marking a commitment to precision and quality that is now recognized beyond Italy.
In 1995, Tommasoโs wife, Daniela, became an integral part of the winery, and in 2005, their sons, Paolo and Giuseppe, followed. Today, the family continues to uphold Valpolicellaโs long-standing winemaking traditions while refining their approach with each vintage.
Winemaking Approach
Attention to detail begins in the vineyard, where grapes are picked by hand and carefully selected, from those destined for drying to those pressed immediately. The winery continuously works to refine its methods, adapting techniques in both the vineyard and cellar to bring out the best in each harvest.
Sustainability plays a key role in their philosophy, with natural methods used to maintain soil health and manage pests. By working closely with the land and respecting the natural balance of the vines, the Bussola family produces wines that reflect both their region and their commitment to continuous improvement.
