Vintage 2021
From the vintage reports of the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella
A changeable year that ended well: a dry September gave healthy grapes.
A changeable season with late flowering and a dry September that gave healthy grapes.
March was very dry; April and May brought about 210 mm, close to normal, and June almost none. July to September had about 200 mm, some 50 mm below the average. Flowering came about ten days late and veraison about nine days late. Downy mildew needed precise work in May and June, and powdery mildew caused modest damage in a few sensitive spots. Dry weather in September kept botrytis away, and picking began around 15 September.
The Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso Classico by Monte dei Ragni is obtained from a careful selection of Valpolicella grapes placed in trays and pressed in late November, then passed over the marc of dried grapes. The wine is refermented and aged in barrels. The production area is located in Marega in the municipality of Fumane in Valpolicella.
It is a hilly area, from 220 to 430 meters. s.l.m. full south-east exposure on limestone soils with a lot of skeleton. The sixth planted and trained is in Pergola Trentino, with 5600 vines / ha and a budding load of 33000-36000 / ha, remembering that in the corvina the first three buds generally do not bear fruit. Average age of the vineyard 25 years. The grapes are harvested in trays and placed under air porches for the first phase of pre-drying, followed by a soft pressing and fermented in steel containers at a controlled temperature.
The wine obtained is then re-fermented on the amarone pomace that is not completely exhausted. Refinement is done partly in tonneaux and partly in steel in varying proportions depending on the vintage.

The small winery Monte dei Ragni was born from the long winemaking tradition of the Ragno family, active for five generations, and from Zeno Zignoli’s ability to turn a small artisanal wine production into an authentic gem of Valpolicella. Today, Monte dei Ragni has become a cult name for enthusiasts and for anyone seeking wines that express territory, nature, and time, without compromising with market logic or conventional practices.
Monte dei Ragni takes its name from a notation found in a nineteenth-century land registry, which identified a small piece of land on a ridge in the municipality of Fumane, in the heart of Valpolicella Classica. It consists of just 8 hectares of land, of which only a little over 2 hectares are planted with vines. Zeno Zignoli cultivates them with determination and deep love for the land, avoiding all synthetic chemical interventions and preserving the region’s biodiversity: olive trees, grains, fruit trees, and vegetables grow among the vines. In addition Zeno, works the land with the help of a horse and opposes herbicide use, considered deplorable, by practicing the “care of grass,” which includes green manure crops composed of over 36 different species.
The wines of Monte dei Ragni are produced in very small quantities and exhibit a quality, sense of place, and expressiveness that leave one speechless. For Zeno, only the cultivation of the land and culture make a man truly free, and his wines are the result of a life philosophy that primarily seeks to preserve the integrity, balance, and beauty of the land.
