Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
A very good year. Hot and dry, with an early harvest of sweet, deeply coloured grapes.
A hot, dry year with an early harvest and grapes rich in sugar and colour.
Little rain fell from the winter onward. Late frost in April damaged a small area near San Martino Buon Albergo. June to August were hot, at times with drought and some sunburn in mid June. Hail in late August and early September, mostly in Valpantena and the east, hurt quality rather than quantity. Corvina was picked in the first week of September, about ten days earlier than in 2016, with high sugar, low malic acid and very good colour potential. The heat kept most diseases away.
Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico Riserva “Mosaico” by Benedetti La Villa
The “Mosaico” wine is an Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva produced by Benedetti La Villa in the historic Valpolicella Classica area. It is made from a careful selection of Corvina Veronese, Corvinone, and Rondinella grown in the family’s hillside vineyards.
After harvest, the grapes are hand selected and placed in well ventilated drying rooms, where they rest for around four months. During this period, natural dehydration concentrates aromas, structure, and balance. Pressing takes place in January, once drying is complete. Fermentation then proceeds slowly for about forty days in dedicated vessels, followed by aging in small to medium sized oak barrels. The wine completes its maturation with at least one year of bottle aging before release.
In the glass, the Amarone Mosaico shows a deep garnet red color. The nose is complex and precise, with notes of licorice, cherry preserved in spirit, dried plum, and a refined balsamic touch. On the palate, ripe fruit is supported by an elegant line of acidity. The structure is firm and robust, yet smooth and persistent, with a long and balanced finish.
It pairs particularly well with game dishes and aged cheeses.
The Amarone Mosaico is closely linked to its place of origin. Beneath the Benedetti family vineyards, archaeological excavations have revealed geometric and figurative mosaics from a Roman villa dating back to the third century AD. This discovery inspired the name of the wine and reinforces its connection to the land beneath the vines.
The Benedetti family has cultivated these vineyards since the mid nineteenth century, combining traditional practices with modern techniques. Today, brothers Simone and Matteo Benedetti continue the work shaped by their father Adriano, giving continuity and depth to this Amarone from Valpolicella Classica.

Benedetti La Villa is a family run winery based in the heart of Valpolicella Classica, on the hills above Negrar, near Verona. The estate combines generations of local vineyard knowledge with a modern, precise approach in both the vineyard and the cellar.
The vineyards sit on hillside sites with limestone rich, stony soils that support balanced ripening and naturally bright wines. Traditional stone terraces are part of the landscape, helping manage slopes and water flow. The family has worked these lands since the mid nineteenth century, maintaining a strong link to place while improving equipment and techniques over time.
The name of the estate also connects to an important archaeological story. Beneath the vineyards, remains of a Roman villa were discovered, including striking mosaic floors with geometric and figurative motifs. This heritage has become part of the winery identity and is reflected in the way the family communicates its connection to the land.
Today the winery is led by brothers Simone and Matteo Benedetti, continuing the work shaped by their father Adriano and earlier generations. The range focuses on Valpolicella classics, from Valpolicella Classico to Ripasso, Amarone, and Recioto, with additional wines that reflect the character of the area.
Visits and tastings are available by appointment for guests who want to learn more about the estate, its vineyards, and its wines.
