Vintage 2021
From the vintage reports of the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella
A changeable year that ended well: a dry September gave healthy grapes.
A changeable season with late flowering and a dry September that gave healthy grapes.
March was very dry; April and May brought about 210 mm, close to normal, and June almost none. July to September had about 200 mm, some 50 mm below the average. Flowering came about ten days late and veraison about nine days late. Downy mildew needed precise work in May and June, and powdery mildew caused modest damage in a few sensitive spots. Dry weather in September kept botrytis away, and picking began around 15 September.
Valpolicella Ripasso Doc Classico Superiore “Mosaico” by Benedetti La Villa
This Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore is produced by Benedetti La Villa in the heart of Valpolicella Classica and is part of the Mosaico line, which reflects the strong link between the family’s wines and the land beneath their vineyards.
The wine is made from Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella, harvested manually at optimal ripeness. Careful vinification takes place under constant temperature control, preserving the varietal character of these native grapes. The Ripasso method involves a second fermentation of the Valpolicella wine on Amarone grape skins, adding depth, structure, and aromatic complexity. After fermentation, the wine ages in small to medium sized oak barrels and then refines further in bottle for at least three months.
In the glass, it shows a bright red color with light purple hues. The nose is intense and expressive, with floral notes of violet, ripe cherry, and refined balsamic accents. On the palate, the wine mirrors the aromatic profile, offering a soft and persistent texture supported by a pleasant line of acidity. The finish is gently spicy, with a black pepper note that adds definition and length.
This Ripasso pairs very well with lasagnette or bigoli with meat sauce, risotto with zucchini flowers, thick spaghetti with tomato sauce and basil, as well as grilled meats.
The Mosaico line takes its name from the Roman mosaics discovered beneath the Benedetti family vineyards, a finding that highlights the deep historical roots of the estate. Benedetti La Villa has cultivated these lands since the mid nineteenth century, combining traditional vineyard practices with modern cellar techniques. Today, brothers Simone and Matteo Benedetti continue this work, shaping wines that remain faithful to the identity of Valpolicella Classica while expressing precision and balance.

Benedetti La Villa is a family run winery based in the heart of Valpolicella Classica, on the hills above Negrar, near Verona. The estate combines generations of local vineyard knowledge with a modern, precise approach in both the vineyard and the cellar.
The vineyards sit on hillside sites with limestone rich, stony soils that support balanced ripening and naturally bright wines. Traditional stone terraces are part of the landscape, helping manage slopes and water flow. The family has worked these lands since the mid nineteenth century, maintaining a strong link to place while improving equipment and techniques over time.
The name of the estate also connects to an important archaeological story. Beneath the vineyards, remains of a Roman villa were discovered, including striking mosaic floors with geometric and figurative motifs. This heritage has become part of the winery identity and is reflected in the way the family communicates its connection to the land.
Today the winery is led by brothers Simone and Matteo Benedetti, continuing the work shaped by their father Adriano and earlier generations. The range focuses on Valpolicella classics, from Valpolicella Classico to Ripasso, Amarone, and Recioto, with additional wines that reflect the character of the area.
Visits and tastings are available by appointment for guests who want to learn more about the estate, its vineyards, and its wines.
