Description

Valpolicella Ripasso DOC Superiore “Ripassa” by Zenato Winery

Indulge in the opulence of Valpolicella Ripasso Doc “Ripassa” by Zenato, a wine steeped in tradition and artistry. As one of the Zenato family’s most cherished creations, this remarkable wine symbolizes more than half a century of viticultural innovation and cellar mastery.

Rooted in the age-old Venetian technique of “Ripassare”—a second fermentation process with Amarone pomace—this wine is the epitome of Valpolicella’s finest expressions. Crafted from a harmonious blend of Corvina, Rondinella, and Oseleta grapes, the wine undergoes initial vinification in steel tanks for 10-12 days. The must is then separated from the skins and patiently stored until January, when the magic of “Ripasso” takes place. It is at this moment that the wine is reunited with the pressed Amarone pomace, fermenting for an additional 7-8 days to gain further complexity, aromatic intensity, and richness.

Following this transformation, “Ripassa” embarks on an 18-month aging journey in tonneaux, rounding off with at least six months in the bottle to achieve its pinnacle of excellence. The result is a wine of incomparable depth and character.

As you pour “Ripassa,” its intense ruby red color captivates the eye, setting the stage for an olfactory experience that is both intense and refined. The bouquet bursts with notes of wild berries, forest spices, cocoa, and balsamic herbs, enveloping the senses in a sophisticated aromatic tapestry.

Upon the first sip, you’ll be welcomed by a soft, warm, and velvety palate, brimming with the luscious flavors of ripe red fruits and sweet spices. Structured yet mellow, this wine boasts a long, savory finish that leaves you yearning for more—a true embodiment of its name, “Ripassa,” an invitation to “Review” or revisit.

A perfect companion to savory meat dishes, cured meats, and aged cheeses, Zenato’s Valpolicella Ripasso “Ripassa” is not just a wine; it’s an experience—a journey through the rich terrains and time-honored traditions of Valpolicella. A wine of this stature doesn’t merely accompany a meal; it elevates it, turning any occasion into a memorable affair. Enjoy the lasting taste and unmatched quality of this magnificent red, a wine that you’ll find impossible to forget and easy to revisit.

Why a magnum

A 1.5 litre bottle holds the equivalent of two standard bottles. The larger volume ages more slowly against the same amount of oxygen, so the wine keeps its fruit and its freshness longer and rewards time in the cellar. It is also the right format for a table of six or more. For shipping, one magnum counts as two bottles.

About Zenato

Zenato stands on 95 hectares split between two renowned areas: white-wine Lugana on the southern shore of Lake Garda and red-wine Valpolicella Classica in the Costalunga hills of Sant’Ambrogio. Sergio Zenato set the course in 1960, pairing modern techniques with a devotion to local grapes, Trebbiano di Lugana for fresh, mineral whites and Corvina, Rondinella, plus a touch of Oseleta for structured Valpolicella and Amarone.

The Santa Cristina estate in San Benedetto di Lugana yields expressive whites shaped by the lake’s mild climate and clay-rich soils. Forty kilometres east, Costalunga’s dry-stone terraces and well-drained marl give the family’s reds depth and length. Precise vineyard mapping, row orientation for optimum sunlight, and careful water management underscore a hands-on approach first outlined by Sergio and continued by his wife Carla and their children Alberto and Nadia.

Beyond Veneto, Zenato cultivates 3.8 hectares along the Via Bolgherese in Tuscany. Here Podere Prospero offers a personal take on Bolgheri DOC, blending Cabernet and Merlot grown on sandy, sea-breeze-cooled soils.

Across all sites, low-impact farming, selective harvesting, and measured cellar work aim to translate each plot’s character into the glass, an approach shaped by more than six decades of family vision and continuity.
