Vintage 2012
Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
A very good year. Heat and drought gave a small harvest of healthy grapes.
A year of heat and drought that the vines came through with healthy grapes and small yields.
A mild, dry winter brought budbreak slightly early, but cold weather in April and May delayed flowering. The summer was hot with little, patchy rain; hail on 21 July hit a small area of Val d'Illasi. Vines faced water, light and heat stress, and acidity suffered while the pH held. Cooler weather and rain at the end of August restored the balance, and swings between day and night finished the ripening well. Harvest from 10 September.
Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico Riserva 2012 “Riserva di Ettore” by Vigneti di Ettore
The 2012 Riserva di Ettore is the result of years of patience, careful selection, and respect for tradition. Released in 2022, a full decade after harvest, it reflects the layers of complexity shaped by time, diverse soils, and the blend of Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and other indigenous varieties. The label, Moon over Valpolicella by Dan Namingha, captures the depth and richness of this wine, celebrating the seasons, the land, and the people who played a role in its creation.
Vineyards and Grapes
Sourced from estate vineyards in the hills of the Negrar Valley at 350 meters above sea level, this Amarone benefits from a south-southwest exposure and clay-rich soils with good limestone content. The vines, trained in the Veronese pergola system, grow in naturally grassed rows at a density of 3,500 vines per hectare.
Harvest and Vinification
Only the finest grapes are selected by hand, harvested into small plateaux to preserve their integrity. They undergo natural drying for about 100 days, concentrating their flavors before fermentation. Produced only in outstanding vintages, this Riserva goes beyond the standard Amarone aging process. After the initial three years in large casks, only the finest 25-hectoliter Slavonian oak barrels are chosen to continue aging for an additional four to five years. The wine then rests in the bottle for another 18 to 24 months, allowing it to develop even greater depth and balance.
Tasting Notes
Color: Deep ruby red with garnet hues, still full of life.
Aroma: Cherry, raspberry, and black fruits lead, followed by dried flowers, spice, balsamic notes, and a touch of tobacco.
Palate: Full-bodied yet refined, with silky tannins, fresh acidity, and a long, harmonious finish.
Food Pairing
This Amarone pairs beautifully with rich meat dishes, game, and mature cheeses. Serve at 18-20°C in large glasses, uncorking at least an hour before serving to allow the wine to fully open up.
A Vintage to Remember
The 2012 vintage holds a special place in the history of Vigneti di Ettore. Though Ettore himself did not see its release, his influence is woven into every bottle, ensuring that his passion and expertise live on. This Riserva is a wine built for longevity, with years of evolution still ahead.

Vigneti di Ettore is built on generations of winemaking in Valpolicella Classica, where tradition and thoughtful innovation shape each bottle. The story began in 1930, when Gioanin purchased the Casetta, a home surrounded by vineyards that laid the foundation for what the estate is today. Over the years, Ettore Righetti expanded the land, selecting plots in the most suitable areas of Negrar to ensure each vineyard expressed the character of the region.
Today, the estate covers 19 hectares, divided among Moron, Jago, Osteria Vecchia, Costa del Buso, and Casetta. Alongside Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella, the winery cultivates lesser-known native varieties such as Turchetta, Pelara, Recantina, and Spigamonti, reinforcing a commitment to diversity and adaptability in the vineyard.
A Focus on Balance and Freshness
The wines are crafted with the idea that elegance matters more than weight. Rather than pushing for power, the focus remains on aroma, freshness, and drinkability. The range moves naturally from the lighter reds of Valpolicella Classico to the depth of Amarone, always maintaining clarity and balance.
Every decision in the vineyard and cellar follows a principle of removing excess rather than adding weight, allowing the purity of each grape to shine. Traditional pergola-trained vines shield the clusters from excessive sun exposure, helping to preserve the freshness and complexity that define these wines.
Sustainability and Organic Practices
The move toward organic and sustainable farming was a natural step for the family, driven by a belief that the work done today must support future generations. The winery follows a circular economy model, maintaining biodiversity and respecting the natural cycles of the land. Every grape is hand-harvested in small plateaux, ensuring gentle handling and careful selection before winemaking begins.
Winemaking as a Collective Effort
At the heart of Vigneti di Ettore is a team that works together with a shared purpose. Gabriele, representing the new generation, builds on the expertise passed down through his family while incorporating new techniques from his experience in other regions. His approach balances tradition with a fresh perspective, always seeking to refine quality while staying true to the land.
The harvest season ends with Galzega, a long-standing tradition that brings everyone together to celebrate the work behind each vintage. This moment highlights the collaboration and dedication of those who contribute to the wines.
Vigneti di Ettore remains committed to careful vineyard management and a measured approach in the cellar, producing wines that reflect both the land and the hands that shape them.
