Bottle: 750ml
Vintage: 2007
Alcohol: 15%
Grapes: Corvina & Corvinone 70%, Rondinella 25%, Molinara 5%
Ageing: 24 months in 500 l. French oak tonneaux and 18 months in medium-to-large Slavonian oak casks. Maturation in bottle for 12 months.
Aromas: As perfect an example of old-school Amarone as you’re likely to find. Power yes, fruit yes, but subtlety, layers, and abundant complexity as well. Trademark bitter cherries, with undertones of almonds, cacao, maybe a little liquorice and something like cool autumn afternoons.
A five star vintage from Speri's best plot, by our own Amarone chart. Nearly twenty years on it is rich, fine and drinking perfectly.

Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
An excellent year. An early season, sunny and breezy, with fully ripe grapes.
An early year with fully ripe, very healthy grapes and normal yields.
A mild, dry winter brought budbreak about 20 days early, still about 15 days ahead at flowering. Rain in May and June came at the right time. Hail on 30 August hit some areas, but most of the territory was spared. Picking began on 10 September in stable, sunny, breezy weather with wide swings between day and night, ideal for ripening and for choosing the bunches to dry.
Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico “Vigneto Monte Sant’Urbano” by Speri
A five-star vintage (according to our own chart!) from a five-star vineyard and a five-star winery. Speri’s top plot of land has made another extremely serious wine, one to be reckoned with, and a must for Amarone aficionados and collectors.
Winemaking: high altitude vines near Fumane. Appassimento for 4 months on traditional arele, before oak ageing for 2 years in French oak tonneaux and 18 months in Slavonian botti. For a further year the wine is aged in the bottle prior to release.
Assemblage: corvina and corvinone 70%, rondinella 25%, molinara 5%.
Soil: igneous and calcareous.
Alcohol: 15%.
Colour: a surprising transparency after a decade or so ageing, garnet with brick tendencies.
Aroma: as perfect an example of old-school Amarone as you’re likely to find. Power yes, fruit yes, but subtlety, layers, and abundant complexity as well. Trademark bitter cherries, with undertones of almonds, cacao, maybe a little liquorice and something like cool autumn afternoons.
Palate: austere, but starting to yield now, big with a touch of heat, and yet smooth, remarkably refreshing and with a finish of incredible longevity.
Ageability: still going strong and will do so for years and years yet if kept well.
Pairing: all the big secondi, of course, but for us this is a sip-and-chat-about-the-world kind of wine.

The Speri Winery, one of the historical families of Valpolicella, is an authoritative and faithful interpreter of Valpolicella Classica wines that has become, due to its uninterrupted traditions and strong territorial roots, a landmark in Italian winemaking.
The Speri Winery, with a story that begins in the first half of the 1800s, has now entered its seventh generation making wine from about 60 hectares of vineyards in the most select Valpolicella Classica areas.
The Winery's strength has always been, and still is, a matter of teamwork, today engaging three generations – Carlo, Alberto, Giampaolo, Giampietro, Laura, Chiara, Luca and Giuseppe – that manage all stages of production activities, from the vineyard to the bottle.
In 2015, after practicing years of sustainable farming, the Winery achieved organic certification for all of the production.
The Speri family, respecting its territorial heritage, has always cultivated exclusively the native grape varieties of the Valpolicella zone (Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Molinara and other indigenous varieties), making wine only from grapes coming from its own vineyards and itself overseeing the entire production process.
