Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
An outstanding year. Plenty of sun, healthy grapes and a record harvest for Amarone.
A spectacular harvest: growers were delighted and grape prices ran above average.
A dry winter and a warm, sunny spring brought flowering forward. Below average rain fell just when the vines were most stressed, so picking started about ten days early on healthy, beautiful grapes. Swings between day and night temperatures gave superb ripening, with sugar about two degrees above average. Loose bunches with tough skins went to dry in record quantities, 100,000 to 120,000 quintals. Hail on 28 June damaged about 400 of the area's 5,000 hectares around Negrar and Verona.

Amarone della Valpolicella DOP Classico 2000 by Quintarelli
Valpolicella celebrated the turn of the millennium with a real vintage to remember, and its late-season warm weather, an unusual ripening schedule, suited the slow, careful, profound approach of Quintarelli perfectly. This wine, truly powerful on release, is now showing all the promise of its early years, really extraordinary tertiary characteristics which only a truly masterful winemaker can produce. An absolutely exceptional wine.
Winemaking: Famously an unusually late ripening season for the meticulously-selected grapes, which then as ever underwent Quintarelli’s exactingly long maceration (two months) then fermentation, spontaneous with indigenous yeasts. Seven years in traditional Slavonian oak follows, for a slow and gentle refinement which showcases the wine’s perfect harmonic balance rather than obscuring it.
Assemblage: Corvina and corvinone 55%, rondinella 30%, cabernet sauvignon, nebbiolo, croatina, molinara and sangiovese 15%.
Soil: Calcareous with volcanic streaks.
Alcohol: 16,5%
Colour: Characteristic garnet, starting to show hints of translucence and brick.
Aroma: Astonishingly complex. The trademark cherries and spice linger yet, but are complemented now by depths of autumn leaves, fine cigars, hints of aniseed and leather as well as balsamic, coffee and violets.
Palate: Its power is there but refined, its tannins too perfectly integrated, and the refreshing acidity that was key to its ageability remains to balance out the body without any sharpness or jarringness.
Ageability: Probably peaking over the next 15 years.

Quintarelli Winery lies in the Valpolicella area, north of Verona. Known for producing Amarone, Recioto, Valpolicella, and other traditional labels, it is associated with Giuseppe “Bepi” Quintarelli, who began focusing on premium bottled wines in the 1960s. The family’s approach remains discreet: the property in Negrar has no prominent signs, and there is no official website. This modest style protects the calm atmosphere that has guided their work for generations.
The vineyards span multiple zones, including Valgatara, Sant’Ambrogio, and Montorio. Here, soils vary from gravelly alluvial deposits to limestone-rich layers and, in some spots, volcanic rock. The main grape varieties are Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella, joined by Croatina, Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, and both Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The winery also makes a white blend using Garganega, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, and Trebbiano.
Appassimento, a longstanding approach in Valpolicella, plays a key role. Grapes, often picked slightly earlier to preserve acidity, dry on straw mats or racks for several weeks to months. This controlled dehydration boosts sugar concentration and flavours. If the dried grapes ferment fully, Amarone is produced, while stopping fermentation earlier yields the sweet Recioto style.
After appassimento, the family relies on slow fermentations and extended aging in large wooden casks. This measured process highlights depth and structure, reflecting decades of practical knowledge. Only the best grapes become Amarone Classico and, in exceptional seasons, Amarone Riserva. Each vintage reflects the steady methods passed down in the family. Today, Bepi’s daughter Fiorenza leads the estate, carrying on the quiet traditions that give Quintarelli wines their recognizable character.
