Description

Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico 2016 by Bertani

The 2016 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico represents Bertani’s long-standing philosophy: a wine built on balance, precision, and longevity rather than sheer power.

Produced from carefully selected Corvina and Rondinella grapes, the wine follows the traditional appassimento process, where the grapes are slowly dried to concentrate aromas and structure before fermentation. This slow and meticulous approach has always defined Bertani’s Amarone, allowing it to develop complexity and age gracefully over time.

The 2016 vintage benefited from healthy grapes and ideal ripening conditions, resulting in a wine with depth and clarity. In the glass, it shows a deep ruby red color with garnet reflections. On the nose, it opens with classic notes of plum, cherry and sour cherry, followed by layers of dried fruit, tea leaf, licorice and spices.

On the palate, the wine is structured and composed, with red fruit flavors supported by fresh acidity and refined tannins. The texture is smooth yet firm, leading to a long, clean and elegant finish that defines the Bertani style.

This is an Amarone that evolves slowly, gaining complexity over time while maintaining balance and drinkability. It reflects a classic interpretation of the Valpolicella Classico area, where elegance consistently takes precedence over weight.

About Bertani

Bertani was founded in 1857 by Giovan Battista and Gaetano in the Valpantena region near Verona. From the beginning, they embraced advanced methods learned abroad while preserving local grape varieties, forging a style that balanced progress with tradition. Over time, the estate expanded into areas such as Valpolicella and Soave, emphasizing a consistent respect for the land and the character of native vines. Today, the winery continues to produce wines with a clear stylistic identity, guided by a philosophy that values the authentic qualities of each terroir.

One of the most recognized wines from Bertani is their Amarone della Valpolicella Classico. The process starts with a meticulous harvest of Corvina, Rondinella, and other traditional grapes at peak ripeness, followed by careful drying (appassimento) on racks for around 120 days. This draws out the natural sugars and aromatic compounds. After the drying period, the grapes receive a gentle pressing and slow fermentation in large oak casks, using approaches that highlight depth and refinement. Prolonged aging in the cellar then helps achieve layers of dark fruit, spices, and subtle herbal notes. The result stands as evidence of what can be attained through patience and respect for local conditions.

Bertani’s overall approach rests on careful choices, starting in the vineyard and continuing all the way to bottling. Non-intrusive ecological methods protect the biodiversity of their lands, and a blend of family knowledge with modern winemaking ensures consistency. Across more than 160 years, Bertani has remained faithful to creating balanced wines, prized for their capacity to develop over time.

With vineyards in sought-after districts of Valpolicella, Soave, and beyond, the winery has developed a range that highlights the distinction of each zone. Though Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is often seen as the pinnacle of this portfolio, Bertani also produces other Venetian appellations, reflecting a wish to illustrate the potential of local grape varieties. Through measured innovation and an enduring regard for tradition, Bertani holds a significant place in the Italian wine landscape.
