Vintage 2022
From the vintage reports of the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella
A hot, dry year. Drought tested the vines, but rain in August helped them recover.
Hot, dry and early: the year of drought, managed through careful work on water.
From January to July only 190 mm of rain fell against an average of 450, a deficit of 60%, and May to July were hot. Young vines and vines on light soils suffered water stress, but rain in August helped most of them recover. Veraison came in late July, about two weeks early, and picking began around 5 September. Disease pressure stayed low; local hail fell in August and September.
Valpolicella DOC Classico Superiore “La Grola” 2022 by Allegrini
La Grola represents Giovanni Allegrini’s vision of creating a wine that expresses strength, harmony, and a true sense of place. The vineyard, facing southeast, lies on a mixed soil of limestone and clay that gives depth and energy to the grapes. Mainly Corvina Veronese with a portion of Corvinone and a touch of Rondinella, the grapes are hand-harvested in the second half of September after a careful selection in the vineyard.
Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures between 20 and 25°C for about fifteen days, using gentle extraction to preserve finesse. The wine is then aged for sixteen months, half in second-use barriques and half in large 85-hectoliter casks. Afterward, it rests in bottle for ten months before release.
The result is a red wine of structure and elegance, where ripe fruit meets balance and freshness. The bouquet opens with blackberries, cherries, and violets, followed by delicate tones of vanilla, tobacco, and dark chocolate. On the palate, mature tannins shape a velvety texture, and the finish lingers with red and black fruit notes.
The 2022 vintage was characterized by early development and challenging drought conditions that persisted from winter into midsummer. Timely rainfall in early August restored the balance in the vines, allowing full ripening and excellent fruit concentration.
“La Grola” is both structured and versatile, ideal for meat-based pasta dishes such as lasagna alla Bolognese, or for stewed mushrooms and aged cheeses. It pairs beautifully with slow-cooked recipes rich in flavor and depth, such as braised or stewed meats.

A Family Tradition in Valpolicella
For generations, the Allegrini family has shaped winemaking in Valpolicella Classica, with roots tracing back to the 16th century. Their influence grew significantly in the 1960s, when Giovanni Allegrini introduced modern techniques that refined grape selection and improved viticulture practices. His work set the foundation for the winery’s evolution, and today, the estate is led by Francesco, Giovanni, Matteo, and Silvia Allegrini, carrying forward the family’s vision.
The Valpolicella Classica Region
Nestled between Verona and Lake Garda, Valpolicella is one of Italy’s most well-known wine regions. The name itself, derived from "val polis cellae," meaning "valley of many cellars", reflects its deep-rooted connection to winemaking. The heart of Valpolicella Classica, where Allegrini’s vineyards are located, spans the hills of Fumane, Sant’Ambrogio, San Pietro in Cariano, Marano, and Negrar. The area benefits from a mild climate and calcareous soils that date back to the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, providing ideal conditions for producing wines with complexity and structure.
Sustainable Practices
Since 2017, Allegrini has been awarded Biodiversity Friend certification, recognizing efforts to maintain a balanced ecosystem. Beyond vine cultivation, the estate protects local wildlife and natural habitats. In 2023, it added Beekeeping certification, further supporting biodiversity. Equalitas certification, achieved in 2019, ensures sustainability across the production chain, from environmental management to ethical sourcing. To minimize environmental impact, the winery monitors water usage and carbon emissions, adjusting vineyard practices to improve efficiency.
The Allegrini Family’s Influence
Giovanni Allegrini’s passion for winemaking laid the groundwork for what the estate has become today. Known for his keen intuition, he earned the nickname "the barrel spider", as he moved quickly between barrels, eager to share and refine his wines. After his passing in 1983, his children Franco, Walter, and Marilisa took over, each contributing to the winery’s continued growth. Today, Franco’s sons Francesco, Giovanni, and Matteo oversee winemaking, while Walter’s daughter Silvia focuses on sustainability projects.
