Vintage 2019
Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
An excellent year. A cold, wet spring, then a hot summer and a harvest right on time.
A cold, wet spring and a hot summer, with a harvest close to the average date.
After a warm, dry March, April and May were the coldest and wettest in 30 years. The summer was very hot, with heat waves at the end of June, peaking at 38°C, and at the end of July, plus some local hail. The spring rain carried the vines through a dry June. Veraison came late, ending in the last week of August; then good swings between day and night brought sound ripening and picking from mid September, a week later than in 2018. A quiet year for vine disease.
Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico Riserva “Scarnocchio” by Monte del Frà
Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva “Scarnocchio” 2019 is a wine of depth and distinction, born from a single vineyard in the heart of Valpolicella Classica. It takes its name from the Scarnocchio cru, an area known for its steep limestone slopes, old vines, and small yields that naturally concentrate flavor and aroma.
Produced only in exceptional vintages, this Amarone is made from Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella, hand-harvested at the end of September. The grapes are carefully placed in small wooden crates and left to dry for about 100 days in a naturally ventilated drying loft, allowing a gradual loss of water and a concentration of sugars and extracts.
Fermentation begins slowly in mid-winter, lasting up to 40 days at low temperatures to preserve purity and aromatic intensity. The wine then matures for 48 months in large Slavonian oak casks and lightly toasted French tonneaux, followed by additional bottle aging before release.
In the glass, “Scarnocchio” shows a deep garnet-red color. The bouquet is generous and layered, with aromas of ripe cherry, plum, and dried blackberry complemented by hints of cocoa, tobacco, and subtle spice. On the palate, it is broad and structured, with polished tannins, dense fruit, and an enduring finish that combines power and balance.
This Riserva expresses the patience and precision required to create a true Amarone of longevity and character. It pairs beautifully with braised meats, aged cheeses, or rich dishes based on game and truffle.

Monte del Frà is a historic family-run estate located in the heart of the Custoza area, just south of Lake Garda. Established in 1958 by the Bonomo family, the winery has grown from a small agricultural venture into one of Verona’s most respected wine producers. Today, the second and third generations work side by side, managing over 200 hectares of vineyards that extend across some of Veneto’s most celebrated appellations, including Custoza, Lugana, Valpolicella, Soave, and Bardolino.
Vineyards and Terroir
The winery’s name, which translates to “Hill of the Friars”, originates from an old monastery vineyard once owned by friars of Santa Maria della Scala. The area’s gently rolling hills are rich in limestone, clay, and gravel soils deposited by glacial movements, an ideal mix for producing wines with depth and freshness. Each vineyard site is carefully selected to highlight the native grapes of the region such as Garganega, Trebbiano Toscano, Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara, as well as international varieties that thrive in the area’s temperate climate influenced by Lake Garda.
Winemaking Philosophy
Monte del Frà combines modern winemaking techniques with respect for traditional Veronese practices. Every step, from vineyard management to bottling, is guided by precision and a focus on expressing the land’s natural character. The cellar is equipped with advanced temperature-controlled systems and aging facilities that enable the production of wines ranging from crisp whites to structured reds, all balanced by elegance and drinkability.
Notable Wines
Among their most recognized labels are Cà del Magro Custoza Superiore, known for its minerality and layered aroma; Tenuta Lena di Mezzo Amarone della Valpolicella, which offers complexity and concentration from hillside vineyards; and Lugana, prized for its purity and longevity. Their portfolio also includes Bardolino, Soave, and Valpolicella Ripasso, each expressing the diversity of Verona’s terroirs.
Sustainability and Vision
The Bonomo family has invested heavily in sustainable viticulture, emphasizing biodiversity, minimal intervention, and reduced environmental impact. Water management, organic soil practices, and renewable energy use are central to their approach, ensuring that Monte del Frà’s wines convey authenticity and balance while respecting nature’s rhythms.
