Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
An excellent year. A cool summer, then a warm, breezy September that ripened the grapes well.
A cool, damp summer, then a warm, breezy September that finished the ripening well.
The winter was warm and dry; cold and rain returned from early April to mid May. July and August were cooler than average with frequent rain, and one hailstorm hit a small area high in the hills. Downy mildew was a challenge, above all around 10 June after four days of rain. September turned fine, with warmth and good ventilation keeping humidity low, and picking for the drying grapes began at the usual time. Fruit set was abundant in every variety.
Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG “Monte Lodoletta” 2016 by Romano Dal Forno
The Amarone “Monte Lodoletta” by Romano Dal Forno is a standout expression of Valpolicella’s winemaking tradition. Known for its depth, complexity, and refined structure, this wine undergoes an extensive aging process in barriques, allowing it to develop remarkable balance and finesse.
Produced from carefully selected Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara grapes, this Amarone comes from the hills of Val d’Illasi, an area northwest of Verona with ideal conditions for red wine production. The chalky soil and temperate climate, influenced by Lake Garda, provide the perfect environment for these native varieties to thrive.
After harvest, the grapes are dried for approximately four months, intensifying their aromas and flavors. The wine is then aged for at least 60 months in barriques, resulting in a deep ruby-red color and an intricate bouquet. Aromas of ripe red fruit, cherry, and plum intertwine with notes of licorice, soft spices, cocoa, and dark chocolate. On the palate, it is rich and enveloping, with velvety tannins and a long, well-integrated finish.
Color: Deep ruby-red
Aroma: Layers of licorice and cocoa complemented by ripe plums and cherries
Taste: Full-bodied, smooth, and complex, with firm yet polished tannins
Why a magnum
A 1.5 litre bottle holds the equivalent of two standard bottles. The larger volume ages more slowly against the same amount of oxygen, so the wine keeps its fruit and its freshness longer and rewards time in the cellar. It is also the right format for a table of six or more. For shipping, one magnum counts as two bottles.

Romano Dal Forno Winery represents a dynamic meeting point between time-honored winemaking methods and modern technological advances in Valpolicella. The winery builds on an ancient tradition of using semi-dried grapes, a practice that has defined the region’s style for centuries, while incorporating innovative techniques that ensure each vintage is both robust and balanced. Romano Dal Forno began his career within his family’s vineyard before choosing to produce wine directly from his own estate in the Illasi hills, where a climate influenced by Lake Garda and predominantly calcareous soils creates optimal conditions for the indigenous red grape varieties.
A significant turning point in his early career was his encounter with Giuseppe Quintarelli, a pivotal figure in Valpolicella winemaking. Under Quintarelli’s guidance, Dal Forno adopted advanced methods in yield management and grape selection. This relationship provided him with valuable insights into both traditional practices and the benefits of adopting new techniques, which he then applied to his own production. The interplay between Quintarelli’s conventional approach and Dal Forno’s readiness to incorporate innovative processes has helped form a distinctive style of Amarone that continues to set high standards in the region.
At the winery, a strict selection process is employed to ensure that only the best grapes, subjected to a dual sorting procedure before and after the drying phase, are used in the vinification process. In addition, Dal Forno’s use of smaller oak barrels allows for a faster and more controlled aging process compared to traditional large wooden barrels. This method not only refines the structure of the wine but also preserves the concentrated flavor derived from the grapes.
Over the years, the winery has embraced advancements such as improved air circulation during grape drying and precise temperature controls during fermentation. These technological improvements work in harmony with age-old techniques to ensure each wine maintains a consistent profile, rich fruit flavors, balanced tannins, and subtle spice notes that clearly express the character of Valpolicella.
Romano Dal Forno’s innovative approach has had a lasting impact on the Amarone scene, influencing many producers in the region to reconsider established methods. Today, his winery stands as a model of how historical practices and modern technology can work together to produce wines that are both robust and refined, consistently representing the unique character of Valpolicella while pushing the limits of what Amarone can become.
