Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
A very good year. Warm weather, plenty of water and a balanced harvest.
A warm year with good water reserves, balanced ripening and a slightly early harvest.
Spring was cold at first, then warm, with repeated spells of cold air and a lot of rain in the hills. Early summer was cool and unstable; from late July it turned hot, with local storms. Strong storms in early September caused local damage, with landslides and flooding in some vineyards. Harvest began on 10 September, four days ahead of the average, with good sugar, balanced acidity and heavier berries thanks to plenty of water.
Amarone della Valpolicella DOP Classico 2018 by Quintarelli
Quintarelli is a winemaking legend renowned for their unwavering commitment to quality and expertise in the art of winemaking. This legacy has earned them a reputation for producing some of the most sought-after, collectible and celebrated wines in the region.
Winemaking Process: The grapes for this wine are carefully selected and arranged in the fruttaio to ensure maximum evenness, optimal appassimento development and to encourage the growth of botrytis which further concentrates the sugar. By the end of January, the grapes are crushed and macerated for approximately 20 days, then fermented with native yeasts over a 45-day period. The wine is then aged in Slavonian oak barrels for a full 7 years, undergoing a gradual transformation into its final, complex form.
Ageing Process: The Amarone della Valpolicella DOP Classico by Quintarelli typically involves aging the wine in Slavonian oak barrels for a minimum of 7 years. This slow and deliberate aging process allows the wine to undergo a gradual transformation and develop its complex flavors, aromas, and structure.
Grape Varietals: The assemblage consists of 55% corvina and corvinone, 30% rondinella, and 15% cabernet, nebbiolo, croatina and sangiovese.
Soil: The vineyards are primarily planted in calcareous and basaltic soils.
Alcohol Percentage: 16.5%
Appearance: This wine boasts a deep red-garnet hue.
Aroma: Intense yet delicate, the aroma is a harmonious balance of powerful fruit and a subtle bitter almond essence.
Why a magnum
A 1.5 litre bottle holds the equivalent of two standard bottles. The larger volume ages more slowly against the same amount of oxygen, so the wine keeps its fruit and its freshness longer and rewards time in the cellar. It is also the right format for a table of six or more. For shipping, one magnum counts as two bottles.

Quintarelli Winery lies in the Valpolicella area, north of Verona. Known for producing Amarone, Recioto, Valpolicella, and other traditional labels, it is associated with Giuseppe “Bepi” Quintarelli, who began focusing on premium bottled wines in the 1960s. The family’s approach remains discreet: the property in Negrar has no prominent signs, and there is no official website. This modest style protects the calm atmosphere that has guided their work for generations.
The vineyards span multiple zones, including Valgatara, Sant’Ambrogio, and Montorio. Here, soils vary from gravelly alluvial deposits to limestone-rich layers and, in some spots, volcanic rock. The main grape varieties are Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella, joined by Croatina, Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, and both Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The winery also makes a white blend using Garganega, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, and Trebbiano.
Appassimento, a longstanding approach in Valpolicella, plays a key role. Grapes, often picked slightly earlier to preserve acidity, dry on straw mats or racks for several weeks to months. This controlled dehydration boosts sugar concentration and flavours. If the dried grapes ferment fully, Amarone is produced, while stopping fermentation earlier yields the sweet Recioto style.
After appassimento, the family relies on slow fermentations and extended aging in large wooden casks. This measured process highlights depth and structure, reflecting decades of practical knowledge. Only the best grapes become Amarone Classico and, in exceptional seasons, Amarone Riserva. Each vintage reflects the steady methods passed down in the family. Today, Bepi’s daughter Fiorenza leads the estate, carrying on the quiet traditions that give Quintarelli wines their recognizable character.
