Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
A very good year. Hot and dry, with an early harvest of sweet, deeply coloured grapes.
A hot, dry year with an early harvest and grapes rich in sugar and colour.
Little rain fell from the winter onward. Late frost in April damaged a small area near San Martino Buon Albergo. June to August were hot, at times with drought and some sunburn in mid June. Hail in late August and early September, mostly in Valpantena and the east, hurt quality rather than quantity. Corvina was picked in the first week of September, about ten days earlier than in 2016, with high sugar, low malic acid and very good colour potential. The heat kept most diseases away.
Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico Riserva “Ambrosan” 2017 by Nicolis
Nicolis’s Amarone Classico Riserva “Ambrosan” is an absolutely princely wine, with great body and infinite elegance and vigor. The Nicolis family has an indissoluble bond with the land of Valpolicella, representing the history of wine in this fascinating region; Nicolis has been a reference since 1951, representing the soul of the wine of this land of famous wines that opens like a hand just north of Verona and that, like the fingers of the hand, gives us unique valleys of their kind ; valleys kissed by the sun and the mild climate of Lake Garda and the wind that flows along the Lessini Mountains.
The Ambrosan Classico Riserva by Nicolis borns on the “Ambrosan” vineyard, in San Pietro in Cariano, with a manual harvest and a careful selection of the grapes which are then left to rest in airy and dry rooms; after 4 months, in the middle of winter, they are softly pressed and here the must begins a long and slow fermentation where the Ambrosan Classico “Ambrosan” ages in Slavonian oak barrels and in barrique for 30 months. It gives us a generous and complex scent, ranging from notes of ripe fruit to undergrowth to leather. A really important and impressive structure for an Amarone Classico that stands out for its aromatic richness and for its elegant sensation of power.

Nicolis Winery cultivates 49 hectares of estate vineyards in San Pietro in Cariano, right at the center of Valpolicella Classica. Since 1951, when Angelo Nicolis and his wife Natalia began bottling for the market rather than only family use, the estate has passed from Angelo to his son Giuseppe and now to grandchildren Angelo and Sofia, who farm with an eye to soil health and low‑impact methods.
Valpolicella Classica itself stretches like an open hand: five “fingers” form the parallel valleys of Fumane, Marano, Sant’Ambrogio, Negrar, and San Pietro in Cariano. Cool currents slide down from the Lessini Mountains while warmer breezes rise from Lake Garda, weaving together ideal microclimates on both foothill and hillside sites. Limestone and marl give Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Molinara their bright acidity and subtle mineral tones, the foundation of every Nicolis wine.
After careful hand selection, grapes for Valpolicella are de‑stemmed, gently crushed, and fermented in temperature‑controlled steel to preserve primary aromas. Bunches intended for Amarone and Recioto rest on open trays for about three months, losing moisture and concentrating sugars in the traditional appassimento. Pressing and a slow winter fermentation follow; Amarone then matures around 30 months in large Slavonian oak, while Recioto spends roughly six.
The result is a range that speaks clearly of Valpolicella Classica: fresh, structured Valpolicella; layered, long‑aged Amarone; and lusciously balanced Recioto, all crafted by a family whose hands have tended these valleys for three generations.
