Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
An excellent year. A cool summer, then a warm, breezy September that ripened the grapes well.
A cool, damp summer, then a warm, breezy September that finished the ripening well.
The winter was warm and dry; cold and rain returned from early April to mid May. July and August were cooler than average with frequent rain, and one hailstorm hit a small area high in the hills. Downy mildew was a challenge, above all around 10 June after four days of rain. September turned fine, with warmth and good ventilation keeping humidity low, and picking for the drying grapes began at the usual time. Fruit set was abundant in every variety.
Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Riserva “Decem” by Pietro Zardini
Amarone Riserva “Decem” from Pietro Zardini is an extraordinary wine born through a thoughtful aging process spanning a full decade. Its journey begins in wooden vats, continues with gentle maturation in amphorae, then gains complexity in French oak barrels, before finally resting in bottles until ready for enjoyment. This meticulous process results in a wine that beautifully combines traditional techniques with innovative refinement.
“Decem,” meaning “ten” in Latin, symbolizes the decade-long aging period dedicated to achieving unparalleled depth and elegance. Each vintage is carefully selected, produced only in exceptional years to guarantee superior quality. The grapes—70% Corvina, 20% Rondinella, complemented by 5% Molinara and 5% Croatina—are harvested by hand, naturally dried for about four months without artificial aids, and gently pressed using traditional methods.
The wine’s intense ruby red color with garnet hints reflects its maturity. Aromatically rich, it offers notes of ripe fruit harmoniously blended with undertones of coffee, cocoa, and exotic spices. On the palate, “Decem” is structured, warm, and elegantly balanced, revealing lingering nuances of matured fruits, refined wood, and subtle amphora hints.
Ideal for savoring slowly, “Decem” pairs exquisitely with red meats, richly flavored cheeses, or as a contemplative wine enjoyed on its own. Serve at 18°C, uncorking 2-4 hours prior, and appreciate it fully within 10-15 years from bottling.
Amarone Riserva “Decem” represents Pietro Zardini’s commitment to authentic, deeply thoughtful winemaking, resulting in a distinctive and memorable wine.

The Pietro Zardini Winery represents an ongoing story deeply connected to Valpolicella, originating in the early 1600s with Leonardo Zardini, a passionate winemaker and the family’s forefather. From humble beginnings in the Valpolicella Classico region, generations of Zardinis have tirelessly cultivated their vines, transforming a modest family farm into the contemporary winery of today.
Each generation has left a distinctive mark: Giacinto, whose determination was legendary; Pietro, admired locally for the powerful oxen he raised; Leone, whose spirit inspired the Amarone Riserva; and finally Pietro Zardini himself, carrying forward their shared passion into modern winemaking.
Today, Pietro blends historical wisdom with contemporary vision, producing wines that combine classic aromas with intriguing nuances. His wines harmoniously balance familiar tastes and innovative methods, connecting the traditions of yesterday with the creativity of today.
About Pietro Zardini
Pietro’s own story began in the old family cellar, Corte Zardini, in San Floriano, surrounded by the scents and sounds of rural life. His formative years were steeped in memories of vineyards, cherry trees, fields worked by hand, and vivid family tales. After specializing in viticulture, Pietro began collaborating at the age of 19 with renowned wineries in the Verona area, developing an approach that reflects both respect for tradition and openness to new ideas.
The result is a unique collection of wines authentically linked to Valpolicella’s past, yet confidently looking towards its future. This vision defines #garantitodapietrozardini, a promise of wines produced thoughtfully and passionately, respecting the rich roots from which they grew.
