Vintage 2021
From the vintage reports of the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella
A changeable year that ended well: a dry September gave healthy grapes.
A changeable season with late flowering and a dry September that gave healthy grapes.
March was very dry; April and May brought about 210 mm, close to normal, and June almost none. July to September had about 200 mm, some 50 mm below the average. Flowering came about ten days late and veraison about nine days late. Downy mildew needed precise work in May and June, and powdery mildew caused modest damage in a few sensitive spots. Dry weather in September kept botrytis away, and picking began around 15 September.
“Secco Bertani – Vintage Edition” Rosso Verona IGT by Bertani
Secco Bertani Vintage Edition 2021 is a refined expression of Rosso Verona rooted in the Valpolicella Valpantena area. The vineyards lie on marl limestone soils rich in iron, a combination that contributes structure, tension and depth to the wine. The blend is composed of 80 percent Corvina, supported by 10 percent Sangiovese Grosso and small additions of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, creating a profile that balances freshness, fruit concentration and subtle spice.
The vines, trained with the Guyot system and averaging around 20 years of age, are planted at a density of 4000 to 5000 vines per hectare, with controlled yields of 100 quintals per hectare. After fermentation, the wine matures for 18 months in traditional 750 litre Veronese casks made of chestnut and cherry wood, followed by 6 months of bottle ageing. This traditional approach allows the fruit to remain central while gaining structure and aromatic complexity without excessive oak influence.
In the glass it shows a ruby red color with garnet highlights. The nose is richly aromatic, offering intense notes of fruit jam and spices. On the palate it is full bodied and firmly structured, with a generous texture supported by lively acidity and a composed, persistent finish. With 13 percent alcohol, total acidity of 5.60 grams per litre and a pH of 3.35, it maintains freshness while delivering depth and balance.
It pairs beautifully with medium flavored pasta and rice dishes, seasoned white meats, grilled red meats and medium aged cheeses. The 2021 vintage is already approachable with brief aeration and will continue to develop over the next five to eight years, offering both immediate enjoyment and solid ageing potential.

Bertani was founded in 1857 by Giovan Battista and Gaetano in the Valpantena region near Verona. From the beginning, they embraced advanced methods learned abroad while preserving local grape varieties, forging a style that balanced progress with tradition. Over time, the estate expanded into areas such as Valpolicella and Soave, emphasizing a consistent respect for the land and the character of native vines. Today, the winery continues to produce wines with a clear stylistic identity, guided by a philosophy that values the authentic qualities of each terroir.
One of the most recognized wines from Bertani is their Amarone della Valpolicella Classico. The process starts with a meticulous harvest of Corvina, Rondinella, and other traditional grapes at peak ripeness, followed by careful drying (appassimento) on racks for around 120 days. This draws out the natural sugars and aromatic compounds. After the drying period, the grapes receive a gentle pressing and slow fermentation in large oak casks, using approaches that highlight depth and refinement. Prolonged aging in the cellar then helps achieve layers of dark fruit, spices, and subtle herbal notes. The result stands as evidence of what can be attained through patience and respect for local conditions.
Bertaniโs overall approach rests on careful choices, starting in the vineyard and continuing all the way to bottling. Non-intrusive ecological methods protect the biodiversity of their lands, and a blend of family knowledge with modern winemaking ensures consistency. Across more than 160 years, Bertani has remained faithful to creating balanced wines, prized for their capacity to develop over time.
With vineyards in sought-after districts of Valpolicella, Soave, and beyond, the winery has developed a range that highlights the distinction of each zone. Though Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is often seen as the pinnacle of this portfolio, Bertani also produces other Venetian appellations, reflecting a wish to illustrate the potential of local grape varieties. Through measured innovation and an enduring regard for tradition, Bertani holds a significant place in the Italian wine landscape.
