Vintage 2020
Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
A very good year. A dry spring, then a very rainy summer; quality varied from area to area.
An uneven year: dry until flowering, then very wet, with a harvest that varied from area to area.
January to May was drier and slightly warmer than usual. June to August brought 575 mm of rain at San Pietro in Cariano and 461 mm at Illasi, against about 230 mm in a normal year, with some hail in June and August. Downy mildew pressed hard after the rains, luckily once fruit set was over; later, botrytis and rot needed care, helped by the September weather. Picking began around 13 September.
Valpolicella Ripasso DOC Classico Superiore “Il Fornetto” by Stefano Accordini
Ripasso “Il Fornetto” Collezione is produced only in select vintages, following the traditional ripassaggio technique, where the wine undergoes a second fermentation on Amarone pomace. This method deepens its structure, adding richness and complexity while preserving the elegance of Valpolicella. A long aging process in oak barrels refines its character, smoothing its edges and bringing balance to its bold nature.
The wine has a deep ruby-red color and a layered aroma profile, where notes of maraschino cherries, black pepper, and warm spices emerge. On the palate, its intensity is immediately apparent, followed by polished tannins that add softness and a well-integrated acidity that gives freshness and length. The combination of depth and refinement makes it a versatile choice for grilled and roasted meats, braised dishes, and aged cheeses.
Made from a blend of Corvina Veronese, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Molinara, this Ripasso carries 15% alcohol and is best served at 18°C to fully appreciate its complexity. Crafted with a focus on tradition and careful winemaking, it reflects the character of its region while offering a wine of substance and balance.

Accordini Stefano: Family Tradition and High-Altitude Viticulture in Valpolicella Classica:
Accordini Stefano is a family-run winery in Valpolicella Classica, shaped by a long-standing commitment to quality and forward-thinking choices. Tiziano and Daniele saw the potential for growth and took steps to modernize production, refining vinification techniques, planting new vineyards, and updating the cellar while expanding into international markets.
A turning point came with the decision to move production to the high-altitude vineyards of Cavalo in the Fumane Valley at 550 meters above sea level. This choice brought new opportunities, allowing for wines with deeper structure, refined aromas, and natural freshness. The project was driven by Tiziano’s expertise in commerce and Daniele’s enological knowledge, supported by their wives, Eleonora and Raffaella, and the next generation, Giacomo, Paolo, and Marco, who continue to build on the winery’s progress.
High-Altitude Viticulture
Today, Accordini Stefano cultivates 25 hectares of vineyards at some of the highest elevations in Valpolicella Classica. The cooler climate and significant temperature shifts between day and night bring out layers of complexity in the wines, helping to shape their structure and aromatic depth. The family follows organic farming practices, ensuring that both sustainability and quality remain at the forefront of their work.
The estate is home to several vineyard sites, each offering distinct characteristics:
- Il Fornetto (planted in 1975) grows Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Molinara in deep, clay-rich soil, where old vines produce balanced and concentrated fruit.
- Tornidora, at 500 meters, features a mix of Corvina, Corvinone, and Cabernet Sauvignon, planted in limestone-rich soil that adds depth to the wines.
- Chiesa Vecchia, at 600 meters, produces Valpolicella Classico, with grapes that develop strong aromatics and natural freshness due to the altitude.
- Monte, located near Lake Garda, benefits from cooling winds, bringing structure and complexity to Corvina, Corvinone, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
- La Cà, near the winery’s agritourism property, grows traditional Valpolicella varieties in skeletal, clay-based soil, ensuring deep-rooted vines with excellent fruit concentration.
With a focus on organic viticulture and energy-efficient practices, including a solar-powered agritourism facility, the Accordini family continues to refine their approach, producing wines that reflect the characteristics of their land while maintaining a balance between tradition and modern techniques.
