Vintage 2014
Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
A difficult year. A cool, very rainy summer; a dry September helped at the end.
A cool, very wet summer made this one of the more challenging years. Warmer, drier September weather brought some recovery, but the Consorzio gives the vintage only two stars.
The regional report records over 250 mm of July rain. Persistent moisture and low summer temperatures complicated ripening; improved September weather helped the grapes recover before harvest, without fully reversing the difficult season. The year had started more promisingly, with flowering around ten days early. Summer cloud cover then reduced sunlight and extended the growing cycle. Harvest began on September 19. The Consorzio records annual rainfall above 1,500 mm, including roughly 860 mm during the growing period, making grape health a central concern throughout the season.

Valpolicella DOC Superiore by Roccolo Grassi
This wine is made from about 50% fresh grapes and 50% slightly dried grapes. The slight dehydration of the grapes allows to change the skin/pulp ratio and therefore to maintain a very fresh fruit, but a little more concentrated and rich in noble components present in the skins. This is followed by a 20-month aging in wood, then assembly and bottling.
It is produced in a part of the vineyard designed to produce only Valpolicella, in which the grapes for Amarone are not selected; this allows to have more concentration, great complexity and aromatic finesse.
Deep ruby red colour. On the nose there are spicy notes of tobacco and white pepper, mineral notes of graphite, coffee, cherry and small red fruits. In the mouth it is fat, full-bodied, soft. It has a sweet tannin, but of great depth.
A very fine and complex wine, an ambitious Valpolicella with great character and personality, where the bottle aging improves its characteristics.

Young and dynamic in the Veneto wine scene, “Roccolo Grassi” is a winery that was established at the end of the 20th century, in 1996 to be precise, in Mezzane di Sotto, a strip of land located halfway between the Valpolicella and Soave regions.
Bruno Sartori began making wine in the 1970s, but it was with the arrival of his son Marco first, and then his daughter Francesca, that the winery changed direction, setting a course radically focused on precision in the pursuit of wines that are clean and complex.
A family-run business, today the Roccolo Grassi winery counts a total of 14 hectares of vineyards, with a limited production of just a few thousand bottles each year. The philosophy is firmly rooted in quality, thanks to meticulous and attentive care of the vineyards and a winemaking process aimed solely at preserving the raw material, with great precision and purity.
Among the rows, the rhythms of nature are fully respected, and with extreme and rigorous attention, in full respect of the environment and ecosystem, yields per vine are kept low. Thus, harvest after harvest, they gather pure, refined, and concentrated grapes in every organoleptic nuance.
In the cellar, never forgetting the region’s deep-rooted traditions, every step of the production process is designed to enhance and highlight everything that the season and terroir have expressed through the fruit. In this way, simply excellent wines come to life.
