Vintage 2021
From the vintage reports of the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella
A changeable year that ended well: a dry September gave healthy grapes.
A changeable season with late flowering and a dry September that gave healthy grapes.
March was very dry; April and May brought about 210 mm, close to normal, and June almost none. July to September had about 200 mm, some 50 mm below the average. Flowering came about ten days late and veraison about nine days late. Downy mildew needed precise work in May and June, and powdery mildew caused modest damage in a few sensitive spots. Dry weather in September kept botrytis away, and picking began around 15 September.
Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG by Allegrini
Produced from 45% Corvina Veronese, 45% Corvinone, 5% Rondinella, and 5% Oseleta, this Amarone reflects the character of Valpolicella Classica, specifically the hills of Fumane, Verona. The vineyards sit at 450-520 meters above sea level, benefiting from a mix of clayey and chalky volcanic soils, contributing to the wine’s structure and depth.
The 2019 vintage followed a traditional harvest schedule, with grapes handpicked in late September. They were then left to dry naturally for three to four months, reducing their weight by 40-45%. This Appassimento process intensifies the flavors, leading to a deep concentration of dark fruit, subtle earthiness, and refined notes of spice and tobacco. Fermentation took place over 25 days in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by 18 months of aging in oak barrels.
This wine presents a bold structure balanced by well-integrated acidity. Rich flavors of black cherries, plums, and dried figs develop alongside hints of cocoa, leather, and baking spice. The finish is long and clean, with a mix of savoriness and refined tannins that evolve beautifully with time.
A versatile choice for game, roasted meats, and aged cheeses, this Amarone also pairs unexpectedly well with sweet and sour flavors found in Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine. Best served between 18-20°C (64.5-68°F), with decanting recommended for full expression.

A Family Tradition in Valpolicella
For generations, the Allegrini family has shaped winemaking in Valpolicella Classica, with roots tracing back to the 16th century. Their influence grew significantly in the 1960s, when Giovanni Allegrini introduced modern techniques that refined grape selection and improved viticulture practices. His work set the foundation for the winery’s evolution, and today, the estate is led by Francesco, Giovanni, Matteo, and Silvia Allegrini, carrying forward the family’s vision.
The Valpolicella Classica Region
Nestled between Verona and Lake Garda, Valpolicella is one of Italy’s most well-known wine regions. The name itself, derived from "val polis cellae," meaning "valley of many cellars", reflects its deep-rooted connection to winemaking. The heart of Valpolicella Classica, where Allegrini’s vineyards are located, spans the hills of Fumane, Sant’Ambrogio, San Pietro in Cariano, Marano, and Negrar. The area benefits from a mild climate and calcareous soils that date back to the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, providing ideal conditions for producing wines with complexity and structure.
Sustainable Practices
Since 2017, Allegrini has been awarded Biodiversity Friend certification, recognizing efforts to maintain a balanced ecosystem. Beyond vine cultivation, the estate protects local wildlife and natural habitats. In 2023, it added Beekeeping certification, further supporting biodiversity. Equalitas certification, achieved in 2019, ensures sustainability across the production chain, from environmental management to ethical sourcing. To minimize environmental impact, the winery monitors water usage and carbon emissions, adjusting vineyard practices to improve efficiency.
The Allegrini Family’s Influence
Giovanni Allegrini’s passion for winemaking laid the groundwork for what the estate has become today. Known for his keen intuition, he earned the nickname "the barrel spider", as he moved quickly between barrels, eager to share and refine his wines. After his passing in 1983, his children Franco, Walter, and Marilisa took over, each contributing to the winery’s continued growth. Today, Franco’s sons Francesco, Giovanni, and Matteo oversee winemaking, while Walter’s daughter Silvia focuses on sustainability projects.
