Vintage 2017
Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
A very good year. Hot and dry, with an early harvest of sweet, deeply coloured grapes.
A hot, dry year with an early harvest and grapes rich in sugar and colour.
Little rain fell from the winter onward. Late frost in April damaged a small area near San Martino Buon Albergo. June to August were hot, at times with drought and some sunburn in mid June. Hail in late August and early September, mostly in Valpantena and the east, hurt quality rather than quantity. Corvina was picked in the first week of September, about ten days earlier than in 2016, with high sugar, low malic acid and very good colour potential. The heat kept most diseases away.

The Valpolicella DOC Superiore by Il Monte Caro is our balanced wine obtained only from slightly surmatured Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella grapes hand picked in plateaux, pressed and aged in steel.
Its freshness is well balanced by a pleasant smoothness. These peculiarities, together with the moderate alcohol, make this wine perfect for creative food matching.

Il Monte Caro began in 1986 when Enzo and Carla Marcolini encountered a dramatic, rocky hillside in the Mezzane Valley of Valpolicella. The estate extends along a southeastern slope of Mount Caro at altitudes from 150 to 300 meters, where seven hectares of vines, olive trees, and fruit trees share space with bees, wild herbs, woodland, and natural springs. The land’s vantage point includes Northern Lessinia, the village of Mezzane di Sotto, and, farther south, the Apennines.
Today, Giorgio and Emanuela lead the organic project, focusing on the well-being of the soil and the biodiversity that surrounds their vineyards. Limestone-rich terrain and steady breezes lend freshness and finesse to the grapes. Tradition stands alongside modern awareness: vines averaging 25 to 35 years grow largely under pergola training, and all vineyard tasks, pruning by the lunar calendar, thinning, leaf work, and harvest, are carried out by hand.
In the cellar, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts respects the individuality of each vintage. Temperature is carefully monitored to ensure gentle extraction of tannins. Oak aging remains measured, emphasizing balance without overwhelming the natural character of the grapes. The guiding principle is to convey the spirit of the mount, the soil, and the year in every bottle.
Beyond its vines, Il Monte Caro also cultivates about five hundred olive trees of ten varieties, among them Grignano, Leccino, Favarol, and Leccio del Corno, in a scenic spot known as “Alla Croce”. Each day’s work in the vineyard, grove, and cellar supports a vision that values harmony with the land, ultimately producing wines and oils that share the story of Mount Caro’s rugged beauty.
