Vintage 2020
Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
A very good year. A dry spring, then a very rainy summer; quality varied from area to area.
An uneven year: dry until flowering, then very wet, with a harvest that varied from area to area.
January to May was drier and slightly warmer than usual. June to August brought 575 mm of rain at San Pietro in Cariano and 461 mm at Illasi, against about 230 mm in a normal year, with some hail in June and August. Downy mildew pressed hard after the rains, luckily once fruit set was over; later, botrytis and rot needed care, helped by the September weather. Picking began around 13 September.
Valpolicella Ripasso Doc Classico Superiore 2020 by Vigneti di Ettore
This Ripasso brings together the freshness of Valpolicella’s native grapes with the depth gained from a second fermentation on Amarone and Recioto skins, creating a wine that is both layered and expressive. The result is a well-balanced combination of ripe cherry, red fruits, and delicate spice, supported by smooth tannins and a long, refined finish.
Vineyards and Grapes
Sourced from 20-year-old vineyards in the hills of Negrar, these grapes thrive in clay-limestone soils with a southwest exposure, ensuring optimal ripening. The traditional Veronese pergola system allows for careful management of sunlight and ventilation, preserving the character of Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Croatina, and other local varieties.
Winemaking Process
Harvested by hand in late September, the grapes undergo fermentation on the skins for two weeks with regular pumping over and délestage to enhance extraction. After the initial fermentation, the wine rests in stainless steel tanks until January, when it undergoes a second fermentation on the skins of Amarone and Recioto, deepening its complexity. The wine is then aged in 5- to 25-hectoliter oak casks for 12 to 18 months, followed by an additional six months in the bottle for added refinement.
Tasting Notes
Color: Deep ruby red.
Aroma: Rich notes of cherries in spirit, red fruits, and hints of spice with herbal undertones.
Palate: Smooth yet bold, with well-integrated tannins and a lingering, balanced finish.
Pairing Suggestions
A perfect match for meat dishes, game, and mature cheeses, this Ripasso is best served at room temperature in large glasses to fully develop its layered aromas and flavors.
With a structure that combines freshness and depth, this wine offers a refined take on Ripasso, making it a versatile choice for those seeking complexity without heaviness.

Vigneti di Ettore is built on generations of winemaking in Valpolicella Classica, where tradition and thoughtful innovation shape each bottle. The story began in 1930, when Gioanin purchased the Casetta, a home surrounded by vineyards that laid the foundation for what the estate is today. Over the years, Ettore Righetti expanded the land, selecting plots in the most suitable areas of Negrar to ensure each vineyard expressed the character of the region.
Today, the estate covers 19 hectares, divided among Moron, Jago, Osteria Vecchia, Costa del Buso, and Casetta. Alongside Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella, the winery cultivates lesser-known native varieties such as Turchetta, Pelara, Recantina, and Spigamonti, reinforcing a commitment to diversity and adaptability in the vineyard.
A Focus on Balance and Freshness
The wines are crafted with the idea that elegance matters more than weight. Rather than pushing for power, the focus remains on aroma, freshness, and drinkability. The range moves naturally from the lighter reds of Valpolicella Classico to the depth of Amarone, always maintaining clarity and balance.
Every decision in the vineyard and cellar follows a principle of removing excess rather than adding weight, allowing the purity of each grape to shine. Traditional pergola-trained vines shield the clusters from excessive sun exposure, helping to preserve the freshness and complexity that define these wines.
Sustainability and Organic Practices
The move toward organic and sustainable farming was a natural step for the family, driven by a belief that the work done today must support future generations. The winery follows a circular economy model, maintaining biodiversity and respecting the natural cycles of the land. Every grape is hand-harvested in small plateaux, ensuring gentle handling and careful selection before winemaking begins.
Winemaking as a Collective Effort
At the heart of Vigneti di Ettore is a team that works together with a shared purpose. Gabriele, representing the new generation, builds on the expertise passed down through his family while incorporating new techniques from his experience in other regions. His approach balances tradition with a fresh perspective, always seeking to refine quality while staying true to the land.
The harvest season ends with Galzega, a long-standing tradition that brings everyone together to celebrate the work behind each vintage. This moment highlights the collaboration and dedication of those who contribute to the wines.
Vigneti di Ettore remains committed to careful vineyard management and a measured approach in the cellar, producing wines that reflect both the land and the hands that shape them.
