Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
A very good year. A dry spring, then a very rainy summer; quality varied from area to area.
An uneven year: dry until flowering, then very wet, with a harvest that varied from area to area.
January to May was drier and slightly warmer than usual. June to August brought 575 mm of rain at San Pietro in Cariano and 461 mm at Illasi, against about 230 mm in a normal year, with some hail in June and August. Downy mildew pressed hard after the rains, luckily once fruit set was over; later, botrytis and rot needed care, helped by the September weather. Picking began around 13 September.
Valpolicella Ripasso DOC Classico Superiore “Seccal” by Nicolis
Seccal is a Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore produced by Nicolis in San Pietro in Cariano, within the historic heart of Valpolicella Classica. The Nicolis family has long focused on precision vineyard work and a restrained, thoughtful approach in the cellar, aiming for wines that balance structure, drinkability, and clear varietal identity.
The blend is led by Corvina, supported by Rondinella, Molinara, and a small portion of Croatina. Grapes are harvested by hand from vineyards with controlled yields. The wine undergoes a first spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in steel tanks in October. In late winter, it is refermented on Amarone grape skins, following the traditional Ripasso method, gaining depth and texture. Aging continues for 16 months in large Slavonian oak barrels, followed by additional bottle aging.
In the glass, Seccal shows a deep ruby red color. The nose is intense and refined, with aromas of ripe plum and cherry, complemented by gentle spicy notes. On the palate it is full bodied and well balanced, with rounded tannins and a long, persistent finish that remains fresh and savory.
This Valpolicella Ripasso pairs well with flavorful first courses, mixed meat dishes, and a wide range of cheeses. A structured yet approachable red, well suited to both the table and relaxed evenings.

Nicolis Winery cultivates 49 hectares of estate vineyards in San Pietro in Cariano, right at the center of Valpolicella Classica. Since 1951, when Angelo Nicolis and his wife Natalia began bottling for the market rather than only family use, the estate has passed from Angelo to his son Giuseppe and now to grandchildren Angelo and Sofia, who farm with an eye to soil health and low‑impact methods.
Valpolicella Classica itself stretches like an open hand: five “fingers” form the parallel valleys of Fumane, Marano, Sant’Ambrogio, Negrar, and San Pietro in Cariano. Cool currents slide down from the Lessini Mountains while warmer breezes rise from Lake Garda, weaving together ideal microclimates on both foothill and hillside sites. Limestone and marl give Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Molinara their bright acidity and subtle mineral tones, the foundation of every Nicolis wine.
After careful hand selection, grapes for Valpolicella are de‑stemmed, gently crushed, and fermented in temperature‑controlled steel to preserve primary aromas. Bunches intended for Amarone and Recioto rest on open trays for about three months, losing moisture and concentrating sugars in the traditional appassimento. Pressing and a slow winter fermentation follow; Amarone then matures around 30 months in large Slavonian oak, while Recioto spends roughly six.
The result is a range that speaks clearly of Valpolicella Classica: fresh, structured Valpolicella; layered, long‑aged Amarone; and lusciously balanced Recioto, all crafted by a family whose hands have tended these valleys for three generations.
