Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
A very good year. Some rain in late summer and a smaller harvest.
A year close to the Valpolicella average, with a positive balance.
The weather from flowering to ripening was favourable. Heavy rain in August and early September threatened grape health. Yields were about 10% lower, in places by over 20%. Hail mostly fell before there was fruit on the vines, apart from one significant storm in the north east. Newer drying methods kept the grapes healthy until the first cold in mid December, and the fermentations ran smoothly.
Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico “Vigneto Monte Sant’Urbano” by Speri
Speri’s hallmark wine from a practically perfect vintage, this is a wonderful wine, in which everything – quality of fruit, quality of winemaking and quality of year – has come together magically, and with careful bottle-ageing it’s only growing in stature.
Winemaking: from the pergola-trained Monte Sant’Urbano site. The grapes are dried on the traditional bamboo arele for 4 months to nearly half the original juice quantity, before 2 years spent in French oak tonneaux and 18 months in Slavonian botti. Before release, it spends another year in bottle.
Assemblage: corvina and corvinone 70%, rondinella 25%, molinara 5%.
Soil: igneous, calcareous.
Alcohol: 15%.
Colour: brick red, translucent with hints of violacea.
Aroma: extremely classic, and after nearly 20 years now extremely deep with tertiary aromas. Up front, restrained red fruit backed by earthy and balsamic notes, but delving deeper will reveal light cigar smoke, truffle, the darkest of chocolate and something like rose petals.
Palate: the power and tannins are now fully integrated, with a hint of spice and heat but largely extremely smooth and velvety on the palate. Nonetheless it is terrifically structured, carrying flavour and aromas all the way through to its extraordinarily long finish.
Ageability: at or approaching its peak, depending on who you ask, but it could no doubt keep going for a good long while yet.
Pairing: to drink by itself, by yourself, in an old oak cabin in the mountains with a book of philosophy.

The Speri Winery, one of the historical families of Valpolicella, is an authoritative and faithful interpreter of Valpolicella Classica wines that has become, due to its uninterrupted traditions and strong territorial roots, a landmark in Italian winemaking.
The Speri Winery, with a story that begins in the first half of the 1800s, has now entered its seventh generation making wine from about 60 hectares of vineyards in the most select Valpolicella Classica areas.
The Winery's strength has always been, and still is, a matter of teamwork, today engaging three generations – Carlo, Alberto, Giampaolo, Giampietro, Laura, Chiara, Luca and Giuseppe – that manage all stages of production activities, from the vineyard to the bottle.
In 2015, after practicing years of sustainable farming, the Winery achieved organic certification for all of the production.
The Speri family, respecting its territorial heritage, has always cultivated exclusively the native grape varieties of the Valpolicella zone (Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Molinara and other indigenous varieties), making wine only from grapes coming from its own vineyards and itself overseeing the entire production process.
