An excellent year. A cold, wet spring, then a hot summer and a harvest right on time.
A cold, wet spring and a hot summer, with a harvest close to the average date.
After a warm, dry March, April and May were the coldest and wettest in 30 years. The summer was very hot, with heat waves at the end of June, peaking at 38°C, and at the end of July, plus some local hail. The spring rain carried the vines through a dry June. Veraison came late, ending in the last week of August; then good swings between day and night brought sound ripening and picking from mid September, a week later than in 2018. A quiet year for vine disease.
Valpolicella Ripasso DOC Superiore “Costa Rossa” 2019 by Ca’ Botta
“Costa Rossa” Valpolicella Ripasso DOC Superiore by Ca’Botta is a structured, dry red wine made from Corvina Veronese, Rondinella and Corvinone, produced through Ca’Botta’s signature double-fermentation process.
The grapes are hand picked from high altitude vineyards between 380 and 520 meters above sea level, a position that brings freshness, structure and a clear mineral character to the wine.
Costa Rossa is produced through a second fermentation: after the initial vinification, the wine is “re-passed” over the pressed skins of dried grapes from Ca’Botta’s Amarone DOCG “Tenuta Cajo,” gaining extra extraction, depth and concentration. The wine is then aged in French barrique.
In the glass, it shows an intense, deep ruby red color. The nose is rich and vivid, with notes of ripe dried fruit, dark cherry, plum and a touch of spice, balanced by a remarkable freshness that is the hallmark of this label.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and dense, with ripe dark fruit and spice, smooth tannins and well-integrated barrique notes. Despite its 14.5% alcohol and concentration, the wine retains freshness and drinkability, leaving a long, satisfying finish.
This is one of the most dense and saturated expressions of Valpolicella Superiore, ideal for those looking for the richness of a Ripasso with the elegance and balance of Ca’Botta’s style.
Why it matters
Double fermentation on the marc of Amarone DOCG “Tenuta Cajo,” French barrique aging and grapes from high-altitude vineyards make Costa Rossa one of Ca’Botta’s most distinctive Ripasso wines — recognized as the best Italian Ripasso according to the 2018 Vivino international ratings.

Tenute Ca'Botta is a family run winery in Valpolicella, Veneto, that has built its reputation on a single, clear idea: dry wines made from dried grapes, where strength of character and elegance go hand in hand. The estate's vineyards sit high above the valley floor, between 380 and 520 metres above sea level, on south west facing terraces swept by steady winds.
At this altitude the grapes ripen slowly, keeping good acidity, thicker skins and a higher concentration of tannins and antioxidants, while the wind itself helps to dry the bunches still on the vine and allows for a later harvest with riper, more saturated fruit.
The first vintage qualified for traditional Amarone della Valpolicella was the 2009, but the real turning point came in 2013, when the family bottled the first wines made with their own invention, the Fermentino Ca'Botta, a maceration and fermentation tank patented in 2014. The Fermentino keeps the cap of skins permanently submerged in the must, drawing out a deeper extraction of colour, tannins and aromatic compounds without any aggressive pumping over. It's the technical signature behind the estate's Signature line, full bodied red wines of 14.5% and above, dense, structured and built around the appassimento method, the slow natural drying of the grapes after harvest.
Alongside the Signature wines, Ca'Botta produces a range of traditional Valpolicella reds from the classic blend of Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella, a small selection of Concept wines born from the question "what if?" (such as Il Priore Rosso Veronese IGT and La Callaia Bianco Veronese IGT), and a few sparkling wines made with the Charmat method for everyday Italian aperitifs.
One detail tells you a lot about the house style: every Ca'Botta wine rests in bottle for at least six months at a controlled temperature before leaving the cellar. Only mature, settled wines are released for sale. The mission, in the family's own words, is simple: to offer full bodied wines where the alcohol never gets in the way of the pleasure of drinking.
