Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
An excellent year. A cold, wet spring, then a hot summer and a harvest right on time.
A cold, wet spring and a hot summer, with a harvest close to the average date.
After a warm, dry March, April and May were the coldest and wettest in 30 years. The summer was very hot, with heat waves at the end of June, peaking at 38°C, and at the end of July, plus some local hail. The spring rain carried the vines through a dry June. Veraison came late, ending in the last week of August; then good swings between day and night brought sound ripening and picking from mid September, a week later than in 2018. A quiet year for vine disease.
Valpolicella DOC Superiore “Hercules Apoteosis” by Pietro Zardini
Hercules Apoteosis is Pietro’s most recent wine, the younger counterpart to his Decem. It comes from Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara grown on predominantly dark soils over debris, calcareous marls and basalts, which lend the wine its weight and savoury depth. The grapes are picked by hand and carefully selected, then fermented traditionally on the skins with a maceration of two to three weeks. What sets this wine apart is the aging: a combination of amphora, oak barrels and barriques over three to four years, followed by a period of rest in the bottle. The terracotta keeps the fruit fresh and linear while the wood adds structure and spice.
The colour is an intense ruby red. The nose is full and enveloping, with notes of fruit, cocoa and vanilla. On the palate it is full-bodied and broad, closing on an aftertaste of dried fruit, spices and a clear amphora signature. At 15% vol. it has real presence without losing its balance.
Serve at 18°C, uncorking two to four hours ahead. It pairs well with red meats and tasty, mature cheeses, and is equally at home as a meditation wine on its own. Best enjoyed within ten years of the vintage.
The Pietro Zardini winery sits in the heart of Valpolicella Classica, near San Pietro in Cariano, and traces its roots to the early 1600s with Leonardo Zardini. Today the fifth-generation vigneron Pietro Zardini runs the estate, pairing the region’s traditional methods with one of its more unusual cellars: a set of sixteen terracotta amphorae of varying sizes, holding close to 7,000 litres, used alongside oak to age the family’s reds.

The Pietro Zardini Winery represents an ongoing story deeply connected to Valpolicella, originating in the early 1600s with Leonardo Zardini, a passionate winemaker and the family’s forefather. From humble beginnings in the Valpolicella Classico region, generations of Zardinis have tirelessly cultivated their vines, transforming a modest family farm into the contemporary winery of today.
Each generation has left a distinctive mark: Giacinto, whose determination was legendary; Pietro, admired locally for the powerful oxen he raised; Leone, whose spirit inspired the Amarone Riserva; and finally Pietro Zardini himself, carrying forward their shared passion into modern winemaking.
Today, Pietro blends historical wisdom with contemporary vision, producing wines that combine classic aromas with intriguing nuances. His wines harmoniously balance familiar tastes and innovative methods, connecting the traditions of yesterday with the creativity of today.
About Pietro Zardini
Pietro’s own story began in the old family cellar, Corte Zardini, in San Floriano, surrounded by the scents and sounds of rural life. His formative years were steeped in memories of vineyards, cherry trees, fields worked by hand, and vivid family tales. After specializing in viticulture, Pietro began collaborating at the age of 19 with renowned wineries in the Verona area, developing an approach that reflects both respect for tradition and openness to new ideas.
The result is a unique collection of wines authentically linked to Valpolicella’s past, yet confidently looking towards its future. This vision defines #garantitodapietrozardini, a promise of wines produced thoughtfully and passionately, respecting the rich roots from which they grew.
