Vintage 2021
From the vintage reports of the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella
A changeable year that ended well: a dry September gave healthy grapes.
A changeable season with late flowering and a dry September that gave healthy grapes.
March was very dry; April and May brought about 210 mm, close to normal, and June almost none. July to September had about 200 mm, some 50 mm below the average. Flowering came about ten days late and veraison about nine days late. Downy mildew needed precise work in May and June, and powdery mildew caused modest damage in a few sensitive spots. Dry weather in September kept botrytis away, and picking began around 15 September.
Merlot Rosso Veronese Igt “Clos Roareti” 2021 by Guerrieri Rizzardi
Clos Roareti Merlot Rosso Veronese IGT by Guerrieri Rizzardi is an expressive and bold Merlot created only in select vintages when the grapes achieve optimal maturity. Originating from a single vineyard enclosed by historic walls on the Guerrieri Rizzardi family estate, acquired in 1810, this wine benefits from deep, mineral-rich, clay-sandy soils abundant in magnesium, iron, and zinc. The vines, carefully managed to maintain low yields, enjoy ideal southwest exposure and are meticulously cared for through precise viticulture techniques.
The Clos Roareti reveals a generous and structured character distinct from typical regional Merlots, displaying rich layers of ripe blackberries, dark cherries, and delicate spice notes, harmoniously integrated with the refined aromas imparted by 12 months of maturation in oak barriques (225 liters), of which 25% are new oak. Its palate offers a full-bodied experience, combining silky tannins and concentrated dark fruits, making it immediately appealing yet promising impressive aging potential for up to a decade or more when stored properly.
This distinctive Merlot is best enjoyed decanted and served around 16°C (60°F) to fully appreciate its complexity and depth. Its powerful yet elegant profile makes it a perfect companion to hearty dishes such as roast game, venison, rack of lamb, prime roast beef, and robust stews, as well as mature cheeses.

Guerrieri Rizzardi is a historic, family-run winery with origins dating back to the 15th century. The estate brings together the legacies of two noble families who played a key role in the development of winemaking in the Veneto region. With vineyards across Valpolicella, Bardolino, and Soave, the winery produces estate-grown wines that reflect the diverse terroirs of these classic regions.
For centuries, the estate has evolved from mixed agriculture to a dedicated focus on viticulture, emphasizing the relationship between soil, climate, and grape variety. The vineyards are planted with both traditional and international grapes, carefully chosen based on soil composition and microclimate. Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Barbera, and Sangiovese form the foundation of the Valpolicella wines, while Bardolino and Soave bring in additional varietal diversity. The estate follows sustainable vineyard practices, with precise pruning and yield control to maintain quality.
Grapes are vinified in three separate cellars, one in each region, to ensure minimal transport and preserve freshness. The winery was among the first in Italy to apply the "Cru" concept, highlighting the significance of individual vineyard sites in defining quality. Over the years, the Rizzardi family has balanced tradition with innovation, expanding their vineyards while maintaining full control over the production process, from vine to bottle.
Beyond winemaking, Guerrieri Rizzardi has also developed a strong presence in hospitality and tourism. Historic sites such as Villa Rizzardi and the renowned Pojega Garden in Valpolicella are part of the estate, offering visitors a connection to the winery’s long history. Today, the family continues to refine their approach, blending generations of expertise with modern techniques to create wines that reflect both their heritage and the land they cultivate.
