Description

Amarone della Valpolicella DOC Classico 1973 by Bertani

A rare and fascinating vintage from Bertani, the 1973 Amarone reflects the house’s timeless approach to balance, precision, and long aging.

The growing season was marked by a well-balanced climate, with consistent temperatures and rainfall throughout spring and summer. Although yields were relatively abundant, a strict selection of the grapes ensured a wine of high quality and depth.

Produced from traditional Valpolicella varieties and following the classic appassimento method, this Amarone was aged extensively before being bottled in April 1983, confirming Bertani’s commitment to long maturation and stability over time.

In the glass, it presents a mature garnet color. The nose is evolved and distinctive, with aromas of truffle, dried fruit, and subtle hints of chocolate, creating a complex and layered profile.

On the palate, the wine is full and structured, with a texture that feels almost gently sweet, balanced by firm yet refined tannins. It still shows a sense of development, with depth and harmony supported by a long and elegant finish.

This is a vintage that highlights Bertani’s ability to produce Amarone with both immediate character and the capacity to evolve over decades, offering a wine that remains expressive and composed even after long aging.

About Bertani

Bertani was founded in 1857 by Giovan Battista and Gaetano in the Valpantena region near Verona. From the beginning, they embraced advanced methods learned abroad while preserving local grape varieties, forging a style that balanced progress with tradition. Over time, the estate expanded into areas such as Valpolicella and Soave, emphasizing a consistent respect for the land and the character of native vines. Today, the winery continues to produce wines with a clear stylistic identity, guided by a philosophy that values the authentic qualities of each terroir.

One of the most recognized wines from Bertani is their Amarone della Valpolicella Classico. The process starts with a meticulous harvest of Corvina, Rondinella, and other traditional grapes at peak ripeness, followed by careful drying (appassimento) on racks for around 120 days. This draws out the natural sugars and aromatic compounds. After the drying period, the grapes receive a gentle pressing and slow fermentation in large oak casks, using approaches that highlight depth and refinement. Prolonged aging in the cellar then helps achieve layers of dark fruit, spices, and subtle herbal notes. The result stands as evidence of what can be attained through patience and respect for local conditions.

Bertani’s overall approach rests on careful choices, starting in the vineyard and continuing all the way to bottling. Non-intrusive ecological methods protect the biodiversity of their lands, and a blend of family knowledge with modern winemaking ensures consistency. Across more than 160 years, Bertani has remained faithful to creating balanced wines, prized for their capacity to develop over time.

With vineyards in sought-after districts of Valpolicella, Soave, and beyond, the winery has developed a range that highlights the distinction of each zone. Though Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is often seen as the pinnacle of this portfolio, Bertani also produces other Venetian appellations, reflecting a wish to illustrate the potential of local grape varieties. Through measured innovation and an enduring regard for tradition, Bertani holds a significant place in the Italian wine landscape.
