Vintage 2021
From the vintage reports of the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella
A changeable year that ended well: a dry September gave healthy grapes.
A changeable season with late flowering and a dry September that gave healthy grapes.
March was very dry; April and May brought about 210 mm, close to normal, and June almost none. July to September had about 200 mm, some 50 mm below the average. Flowering came about ten days late and veraison about nine days late. Downy mildew needed precise work in May and June, and powdery mildew caused modest damage in a few sensitive spots. Dry weather in September kept botrytis away, and picking began around 15 September.
Valpolicella DOC Superiore by Musella
Origin and Terroir: The Valpolicella DOC Superiore 2020 by Musella is crafted in the Veneto region of Italy, northeast of Verona, where the hills separate Montorio from the Valle d’Illasi. This unique location, along with a combination of calcareous soil enriched with red clay and tufo, contributes to the distinct characteristics of this wine. The vineyards, covering 27 hectares of modern Guyot vertical trellis, 8 hectares of traditional Pergola, and 20 rented hectares, date back from 1960 to 2015.
Grape Varieties: This blend features 85% Corvina and Corvinone, 10% Rondinella, and 5% Barbera. The careful selection and combination of these varieties ensure a balanced and refined profile.
Harvest and Vintage: The grapes are harvested from August 3rd to October 10th, with each plant yielding approximately 2 kg. The vintage climate of 2020 presented a balanced winter with beneficial frost, a sunny and moderate spring, and a hot but not overly dry summer. Despite a challenging weather event on August 23rd, which brought strong winds and hail, the conditions post-storm allowed the grapes to ripen fully, resulting in a more than satisfactory harvest.
Winemaking: The maceration and fermentation process spans 12-15 days on the skins at a controlled temperature. The wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation before being transferred into large 3500-liter barrels and cement tanks for 12 months of maturation. This meticulous process ensures a refined and elegant final product.
Tasting Notes: The Valpolicella DOC Superiore 2020 displays a vibrant ruby red color. Its freshness and fruit integrity are immediately noticeable, offering a medium-bodied profile that is both pleasant and elegant. The aftertaste hints at dried flowers, adding a layer of sophistication to each sip.
Musella’s Philosophy: Musella’s commitment to biodynamic practices underscores their dedication to producing wines that truly reflect the potential of the Valpolicella region. By freeing themselves from market constraints, they aim to showcase the elegance and class inherent in their traditional varieties. This wine embodies the rich nuances and complexities of its terroir, offering a sincere and balanced interpretation that appeals to the heart of Valpolicella wine lovers.

Located within a historic 16th-century estate, Musella Winery combines tradition with modern winemaking in a setting surrounded by meadows and the Fibbio stream. Once a noble stable, the carefully restored cellar now houses barrels where wines mature under ideal conditions, complemented by state-of-the-art winemaking facilities.
Spanning nearly 400 hectares, the estate benefits from diverse soil compositions across three vineyard sites, allowing for a range of expressions in its wines. The estate follows biodynamic principles, a practice rooted in deep respect for the land. Certified by Demeter since 2014 and BDA Farmers since 2020, Musella embraces a holistic approach that avoids synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, instead relying on natural cycles and soil vitality.
The winery welcomes guests for guided tastings, where small groups can explore Musella’s wines alongside regional specialties like Monte Veronese cheese. Visitors can also stay at the Country Relais, where historic charm meets comfortable hospitality.
Musella’s vineyards, Monte del Drago, Perlar, and Palazzina, are rich in biodiversity, with plantings of Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Oseleta, and select international varieties. The soils range from clay and tufa to red earth, contributing complexity and depth to each vintage.
Through careful vineyard administration and a philosophy that respects nature’s rhythms, Musella produces wines that reflect both the character of the land and the thoughtful techniques behind each bottle.
