Vintage 2019
Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
An excellent year. A cold, wet spring, then a hot summer and a harvest right on time.
A cold, wet spring and a hot summer, with a harvest close to the average date.
After a warm, dry March, April and May were the coldest and wettest in 30 years. The summer was very hot, with heat waves at the end of June, peaking at 38°C, and at the end of July, plus some local hail. The spring rain carried the vines through a dry June. Veraison came late, ending in the last week of August; then good swings between day and night brought sound ripening and picking from mid September, a week later than in 2018. A quiet year for vine disease.

Valpolicella Ripasso Doc Classico Superiore 2019 by Clementi
The Valpolicella Ripasso DOC Classico Superiore by Clementi is a wine deeply connected to the traditions of the Valpolicella region, enriched by the Ripasso method. This technique involves a second fermentation on the grape skins used for Amarone, adding structure and complexity.
The 2019 vintage is composed of 65% Corvina and Corvinone, 30% Rondinella, and 5% Molinara, cultivated under the Pergola Veronese training system. The grapes are hand-harvested in September and fermented shortly after. In February, the wine is introduced to the Amarone grape skins for ten days, enhancing its depth and intensifying its flavors. Daily pump-overs and a mid-process delestage further refine its character before aging in large French oak barrels for at least three years.
Garnet-red in color, it opens with inviting aromas of cherry preserves, wild berries, and delicate floral hints. Subtle notes of dried fruit, vanilla, and spice emerge from the time spent in oak, adding warmth and elegance. The palate is full-bodied, well-balanced, and velvety, with layers of ripe fruit and a long, satisfying finish.
With an alcohol content of 14.5%, this Valpolicella Ripasso pairs beautifully with risottos, roasted meats, and aged cheeses. Best served at 15-18°C in a wide glass, it benefits from being uncorked an hour before drinking to allow its full character to develop.

Clementi Winery: A Story Rooted in Valpolicella
Pietro Clementi’s journey from law to winemaking began with memories of his childhood in Illasi during World War II. Growing up in a family of lawyers, he developed a deep connection to the land, shaped by the traditional vineyard work of the time, manual grape pressing, small-basket harvesting, and ox-drawn plows. These early experiences eventually led him to leave his legal career behind and focus on producing wine.
In 1969, Pietro acquired a historic 17th-century estate in the Gnirega Contrada of Marano di Valpolicella. Spanning twenty hectares of vineyards and woodland, this property became the foundation for his winemaking project. Initially, production took place in a small cellar at his home, with guidance from experienced local farmers and producers, including the meticulous sharecropper "Musciol" and the well-respected Santo Aldrighetti.
Over time, Pietro refined his craft, selecting grapes carefully and replanting older vineyards. His Amarone was initially reserved for family, friends, and political gatherings, earning the nickname “The Mayor’s Amarone.” However, in 2002, he expanded his vision, modernizing the winery and shifting towards larger-scale production for both national and international markets.
A Family-Run Estate
Today, Clementi Winery is run by Pietro’s three children: Maria, Maurizio, and Bernardino. Each plays a key role, Maria manages administration, Maurizio oversees marketing and sales, while Bernardino leads production, still under their father’s guidance. The family has also partnered with Veneto-based oenologist Enrico Nicolis to refine their approach.
The Valpolicella Classica Region
The winery is situated in the heart of the Valpolicella Classica area, known for its long tradition of winemaking. This historic region, north of Verona and east of Lake Garda, benefits from the protective influence of the Lessini Mountains. Valpolicella is divided into three recognized production zones: Classica, Valpantena, and the wider Valpolicella DOC area.
Clementi Winery’s vineyards, covering 14 hectares at 300 to 400 meters of altitude, are planted primarily with native grape varieties: Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Molinara, Oseleta, and Croatina. The vines grow on traditional stone terraces, known as "marogne," facing southwest, a prime location for quality viticulture. The region’s limestone and clay-rich soil, combined with a mild, Mediterranean-leaning climate, creates ideal conditions for growing balanced and expressive grapes.
Respect for Tradition and Sustainability
Clementi Winery is part of the Federation of Independent Winemakers (FIVI), an association dedicated to preserving local identity and ensuring that winemakers oversee the entire process, from vineyard management to bottling. The family is also committed to sustainable practices, adhering to the National Integrated Production Quality System (SQNPI), which minimizes environmental impact through careful agronomic choices, reduced chemical treatments, and responsible water use.
With deep roots in Valpolicella, Clementi Winery continues to honor both tradition and innovation, crafting wines that reflect the character of the land while embracing a thoughtful approach to production.
