Vintage 2022
From the vintage reports of the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella
A hot, dry year. Drought tested the vines, but rain in August helped them recover.
Hot, dry and early: the year of drought, managed through careful work on water.
From January to July only 190 mm of rain fell against an average of 450, a deficit of 60%, and May to July were hot. Young vines and vines on light soils suffered water stress, but rain in August helped most of them recover. Veraison came in late July, about two weeks early, and picking began around 5 September. Disease pressure stayed low; local hail fell in August and September.
Valpolicella Ripasso Doc Classico Superiore “Tenuta Lena di Mezzo” by Monte del Frà
A fine expression of the Valpolicella Classico hills, this Ripasso Classico Superiore from Tenuta Lena di Mezzo is produced by the Bonomo family at Monte del Frà using grapes grown on the estate’s own vineyards between 250 and 450 meters above sea level. The soils are a mix of tuff, clay, and limestone, and the vines are trained in the traditional Pergola Veronese system — ideal for achieving balanced ripening and concentration.
Grape Varieties
Corvina Veronese, Corvinone, and Rondinella.
Vinification & Aging
The grapes are hand-harvested in the second half of October and briefly dried in boxes at controlled temperature to enhance aromatic complexity. After destemming and pressing, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at 18°C, with daily pump-overs for optimal extraction.
When the Amarone fermentation is complete, the Ripasso wine is re-fermented on the Amarone pomace at the end of winter — a traditional method that enriches texture, aroma, and depth. The wine then matures for approximately 20 months in 30-hectolitre French oak casks, developing its complexity before bottling.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby red in color. The bouquet opens with violet, ripe cherry, and hints of black pepper and cinnamon, followed by notes of licorice, vanilla, and tobacco. On the palate, it is full-bodied, harmonious, and finely textured, with elegant tannins and a lingering finish that recalls the aromas perceived on the nose.
Food Pairing
Excellent with braised, grilled, or roasted red meats, aged cheeses, rich fish dishes, and spicy Asian cuisine. It can also be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative wine.

Monte del Frà is a historic family-run estate located in the heart of the Custoza area, just south of Lake Garda. Established in 1958 by the Bonomo family, the winery has grown from a small agricultural venture into one of Verona’s most respected wine producers. Today, the second and third generations work side by side, managing over 200 hectares of vineyards that extend across some of Veneto’s most celebrated appellations, including Custoza, Lugana, Valpolicella, Soave, and Bardolino.
Vineyards and Terroir
The winery’s name, which translates to “Hill of the Friars”, originates from an old monastery vineyard once owned by friars of Santa Maria della Scala. The area’s gently rolling hills are rich in limestone, clay, and gravel soils deposited by glacial movements, an ideal mix for producing wines with depth and freshness. Each vineyard site is carefully selected to highlight the native grapes of the region such as Garganega, Trebbiano Toscano, Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara, as well as international varieties that thrive in the area’s temperate climate influenced by Lake Garda.
Winemaking Philosophy
Monte del Frà combines modern winemaking techniques with respect for traditional Veronese practices. Every step, from vineyard management to bottling, is guided by precision and a focus on expressing the land’s natural character. The cellar is equipped with advanced temperature-controlled systems and aging facilities that enable the production of wines ranging from crisp whites to structured reds, all balanced by elegance and drinkability.
Notable Wines
Among their most recognized labels are Cà del Magro Custoza Superiore, known for its minerality and layered aroma; Tenuta Lena di Mezzo Amarone della Valpolicella, which offers complexity and concentration from hillside vineyards; and Lugana, prized for its purity and longevity. Their portfolio also includes Bardolino, Soave, and Valpolicella Ripasso, each expressing the diversity of Verona’s terroirs.
Sustainability and Vision
The Bonomo family has invested heavily in sustainable viticulture, emphasizing biodiversity, minimal intervention, and reduced environmental impact. Water management, organic soil practices, and renewable energy use are central to their approach, ensuring that Monte del Frà’s wines convey authenticity and balance while respecting nature’s rhythms.
