Vintage 2022
From the vintage reports of the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella
A hot, dry year. Drought tested the vines, but rain in August helped them recover.
Hot, dry and early: the year of drought, managed through careful work on water.
From January to July only 190 mm of rain fell against an average of 450, a deficit of 60%, and May to July were hot. Young vines and vines on light soils suffered water stress, but rain in August helped most of them recover. Veraison came in late July, about two weeks early, and picking began around 5 September. Disease pressure stayed low; local hail fell in August and September.

Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Valpantena by Bertani
Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Valpantena is produced from 80% Corvina Veronese and 20% Rondinella, grown in the Valpantena area of Valpolicella on marl limestone soils on the eastern slopes and clay limestone soils on the western side of the valley. The vineyards are planted at a density of 4000 to 4500 vines per hectare, with an average vine age of 15 to 20 years, trained using Guyot and traditional Pergola systems, and yielding around 100 quintals per hectare.
After harvest, the grapes are dried in dedicated drying rooms at the Grezzana winery. Fermentation follows with a long maceration on the skins to extract depth of fruit and structure. The wine then matures for 24 months in 30, 54, and 75 hectolitre oak barrels and rests for at least 6 months in bottle before release.
In the glass, it shows an intense ruby colour. The nose opens with generous aromas of cherry and blackberry, accompanied by notes of cinnamon and black pepper. The palate is soft and creamy on entry, gradually revealing power and persistence, with firm, savoury tannins that carry through to a long finish. With 15.9% alcohol, balanced by a total acidity of 6.1 g per litre and a pH of 3.45, it pairs beautifully with rich dishes, mature cheeses, and deeply flavoured meat preparations such as braised beef or game.

Bertani was founded in 1857 by Giovan Battista and Gaetano in the Valpantena region near Verona. From the beginning, they embraced advanced methods learned abroad while preserving local grape varieties, forging a style that balanced progress with tradition. Over time, the estate expanded into areas such as Valpolicella and Soave, emphasizing a consistent respect for the land and the character of native vines. Today, the winery continues to produce wines with a clear stylistic identity, guided by a philosophy that values the authentic qualities of each terroir.
One of the most recognized wines from Bertani is their Amarone della Valpolicella Classico. The process starts with a meticulous harvest of Corvina, Rondinella, and other traditional grapes at peak ripeness, followed by careful drying (appassimento) on racks for around 120 days. This draws out the natural sugars and aromatic compounds. After the drying period, the grapes receive a gentle pressing and slow fermentation in large oak casks, using approaches that highlight depth and refinement. Prolonged aging in the cellar then helps achieve layers of dark fruit, spices, and subtle herbal notes. The result stands as evidence of what can be attained through patience and respect for local conditions.
Bertani’s overall approach rests on careful choices, starting in the vineyard and continuing all the way to bottling. Non-intrusive ecological methods protect the biodiversity of their lands, and a blend of family knowledge with modern winemaking ensures consistency. Across more than 160 years, Bertani has remained faithful to creating balanced wines, prized for their capacity to develop over time.
With vineyards in sought-after districts of Valpolicella, Soave, and beyond, the winery has developed a range that highlights the distinction of each zone. Though Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is often seen as the pinnacle of this portfolio, Bertani also produces other Venetian appellations, reflecting a wish to illustrate the potential of local grape varieties. Through measured innovation and an enduring regard for tradition, Bertani holds a significant place in the Italian wine landscape.
