Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
An excellent year. A cold, wet spring, then a hot summer and a harvest right on time.
A cold, wet spring and a hot summer, with a harvest close to the average date.
After a warm, dry March, April and May were the coldest and wettest in 30 years. The summer was very hot, with heat waves at the end of June, peaking at 38°C, and at the end of July, plus some local hail. The spring rain carried the vines through a dry June. Veraison came late, ending in the last week of August; then good swings between day and night brought sound ripening and picking from mid September, a week later than in 2018. A quiet year for vine disease.
Valpolicella Superiore Doc “Monte Lodoletta” by Romano Dal Forno
Presenting the Valpolicella Superiore DOC “Monte Lodoletta” 2019 by Romano Dal Forno. This exceptional wine captures the character of its renowned hillside vineyards in the northwest of Verona. Ranked among the region’s top labels, it is produced with great attention to detail. The grapes—Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara—are harvested from a single historic vineyard celebrated for its unique qualities. Romano Dal Forno, a celebrated figure in Valpolicella wine, has earned global acclaim from critics for his remarkable work.
This wine comes from a winery managed by four generations of grape growers over an estate covering approximately 25 hectares in the Illasi hills. A mild, breezy climate influenced by nearby Lake Garda, combined with predominantly calcareous soils, creates an ideal environment for these indigenous red grape varieties. A significant turning point occurred after an influential meeting with Giuseppe Quintarelli, a notable figure in Valpolicella wine, which reinforced the commitment to achieving high quality in viticulture.
After harvest, the grapes undergo red vinification with extended skin maceration. The wine is then aged for 36 months in new barriques before bottling. In the glass, it displays an intense ruby red color. Its aroma offers notes of cherry and ripe red fruit, complemented by hints of dried fruits, well-aged wood, and spices. On the palate, a firm structure, balanced tannins, and a long, fruity finish convey the true character of Valpolicella.
Color: Deep ruby red
Aroma: Mature red fruit with hints of dried fruits, particularly walnuts and almonds
Taste: Harmonious and velvety, with significant tannins and a finish of fruit in spirits

Romano Dal Forno Winery represents a dynamic meeting point between time-honored winemaking methods and modern technological advances in Valpolicella. The winery builds on an ancient tradition of using semi-dried grapes, a practice that has defined the region’s style for centuries, while incorporating innovative techniques that ensure each vintage is both robust and balanced. Romano Dal Forno began his career within his family’s vineyard before choosing to produce wine directly from his own estate in the Illasi hills, where a climate influenced by Lake Garda and predominantly calcareous soils creates optimal conditions for the indigenous red grape varieties.
A significant turning point in his early career was his encounter with Giuseppe Quintarelli, a pivotal figure in Valpolicella winemaking. Under Quintarelli’s guidance, Dal Forno adopted advanced methods in yield management and grape selection. This relationship provided him with valuable insights into both traditional practices and the benefits of adopting new techniques, which he then applied to his own production. The interplay between Quintarelli’s conventional approach and Dal Forno’s readiness to incorporate innovative processes has helped form a distinctive style of Amarone that continues to set high standards in the region.
At the winery, a strict selection process is employed to ensure that only the best grapes, subjected to a dual sorting procedure before and after the drying phase, are used in the vinification process. In addition, Dal Forno’s use of smaller oak barrels allows for a faster and more controlled aging process compared to traditional large wooden barrels. This method not only refines the structure of the wine but also preserves the concentrated flavor derived from the grapes.
Over the years, the winery has embraced advancements such as improved air circulation during grape drying and precise temperature controls during fermentation. These technological improvements work in harmony with age-old techniques to ensure each wine maintains a consistent profile, rich fruit flavors, balanced tannins, and subtle spice notes that clearly express the character of Valpolicella.
Romano Dal Forno’s innovative approach has had a lasting impact on the Amarone scene, influencing many producers in the region to reconsider established methods. Today, his winery stands as a model of how historical practices and modern technology can work together to produce wines that are both robust and refined, consistently representing the unique character of Valpolicella while pushing the limits of what Amarone can become.
