An excellent year. A cold, wet spring, then a hot summer and a harvest right on time.

After a warm, dry March, April and May were the coldest and wettest in 30 years. The summer was very hot, with heat waves at the end of June, peaking at 38°C, and at the end of July, plus some local hail. The spring rain carried the vines through a dry June. Veraison came late, ending in the last week of August; then good swings between day and night brought sound ripening and picking from mid September, a week later than in 2018. A quiet year for vine disease.
Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG 2019 – MAGNUM
La Collina dei Ciliegi is an estate in Valpantena, a valley north of Verona, with vineyards at 450 to 700 metres above sea level, making them among the highest in the Valpantena. The 2020 Amarone is produced from 55% Corvina, 40% Corvinone and 5% Rondinella, all hand-harvested in the second half of September. After harvest, the grapes are dried in the estate drying loft for approximately 100 days before fermentation, a process that concentrates sugars, flavours and structure. The wine is deep garnet red in colour, with an aromatic profile of Morello cherry, plum preserve, sweet spices and cocoa, and a palate that balances great power with considerable agility. Tannins are substantial but polished, and the finish is long and gently warming at 15% ABV.
La Collina dei Ciliegi was founded in 2005 by Massimo Gianolli in the high Valpantena, the valley north of Verona, around the small restored village of Erbin. The estate farms about 58 hectares between 450 and 700 metres, unusually high ground for the area, and has been certified organic since 2023. Altitude sets the style: reds that keep freshness and perfume alongside Veronese depth. Besides the wines, the family runs the Ca’ del Moro wine retreat at Erbin, making the property one of the Valpantena’s gathering points for food, wine and walking.
