Vintage 2021
From the vintage reports of the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella
A changeable year that ended well: a dry September gave healthy grapes.
A changeable season with late flowering and a dry September that gave healthy grapes.
March was very dry; April and May brought about 210 mm, close to normal, and June almost none. July to September had about 200 mm, some 50 mm below the average. Flowering came about ten days late and veraison about nine days late. Downy mildew needed precise work in May and June, and powdery mildew caused modest damage in a few sensitive spots. Dry weather in September kept botrytis away, and picking began around 15 September.
Valpolicella Doc Superiore “Maternigo” by Tedeschi
Maternigo is a Valpolicella DOC Superiore that reflects the character of its terroir, crafted with precision from vine to bottle. Sourced from the Impervio vineyard—named for its steep, demanding slopes within the expansive Maternigo estate—this wine benefits from advanced soil studies and vine monitoring. The result is a structured and well-balanced expression, rich in fruit and spice, with excellent aging potential.
From Vineyard to Bottle
Situated at 400 meters above sea level, the Impervio vineyard is characterized by white and yellow limestone marls of moraine origin, contributing to the wine’s freshness and depth. The vines, averaging 10 years of age, are planted at a density of 5,000 per hectare and trained using the Guyot system to optimize fruit quality.
Hand-harvested in mid to late October, only fully ripened grapes are selected. After crushing and destemming, the wine undergoes controlled fermentation and maceration for 20 days at 20-23°C. Aging takes place in 20-25 hl Slavonian oak casks for 14 months, followed by six months of bottle aging, refining its complexity and depth.
Tasting Notes
- Color: Deep ruby red with a striking intensity.
- Aroma: Redcurrants, cherries, and plums blend with mineral undertones, subtle spice, and a touch of vanilla.
- Palate: A well-balanced fusion of ripe fruit, structured tannins, and bright acidity, leading to a long, layered finish with great aging potential.
Pairing Suggestions
This wine complements red meats, game, and mature cheeses with dry textures and low-fat content. Best served at 16-18°C for optimal expression.

A Story Rooted in Valpolicella
Tedeschi has built a strong reputation for producing wines that reflect the character of Valpolicella, combining tradition with innovation. Years of research and careful vineyard management have allowed the family to develop wines that express a deep connection to their land. Sustainability is a key part of their approach, with certifications such as Biodiversity Friend and Equalitas ensuring responsible practices that respect the environment. Every decision, from vine selection to cultivation methods, is guided by a commitment to quality.
Monte Olmi
Monte Olmi, a historic vineyard in Pedemonte within the Valpolicella Classica region, was acquired by Lorenzo Tedeschi in 1918. This site has been at the heart of the family’s winemaking philosophy, producing Amarone Capitel Monte Olmi since 1964. The vineyard's terraced landscape, shaped by generations of careful cultivation, provides an ideal setting for grapes that develop depth and complexity. The wine has remained a benchmark for its refined structure and long-lasting character.
La Fabriseria
Located in Le Pontare, between Sant’Ambrogio di Valpolicella and Fumane, La Fabriseria was planted in the early 2000s. The vineyard is marked by two ancient crosses, believed to be of Celtic origin, that once guided travelers on their way to a nearby sanctuary. The name "La Fabriseria" comes from a local tradition where the village parish council, including the Tedeschi family's ancestors, would gather and conclude their meetings with a tasting of the finest wines. Today, the name is honored through two exceptional wines, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva La Fabriseria and Valpolicella Classico Superiore La Fabriseria, both made from carefully selected grapes grown in this vineyard.
Maternigo
Acquired in 2006, Maternigo ("mother’s land") is a unique estate spanning 84 hectares in Valpolicella’s DOC zone, between Tregnago and Mezzane di Sotto. The property includes a historic building, likely of monastic origin, dating back to the 15th century. Today, the estate features 34 hectares of vineyards and two hectares of olive groves, surrounded by forest. Extensive research led to the identification of two exceptional vineyard sites: Impervio, named for its steep incline, which produces Valpolicella Superiore Maternigo, and Barila, known for its ideal conditions for Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva Maternigo Cru.
With a history spanning generations, Tedeschi continues to refine its winemaking through meticulous vineyard management, sustainable practices, and a deep respect for Valpolicella’s land.
