Vintage 2019
Stars from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, for Amarone della Valpolicella
An excellent year. A cold, wet spring, then a hot summer and a harvest right on time.
A cold, wet spring and a hot summer, with a harvest close to the average date.
After a warm, dry March, April and May were the coldest and wettest in 30 years. The summer was very hot, with heat waves at the end of June, peaking at 38°C, and at the end of July, plus some local hail. The spring rain carried the vines through a dry June. Veraison came late, ending in the last week of August; then good swings between day and night brought sound ripening and picking from mid September, a week later than in 2018. A quiet year for vine disease.

Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico by Villa della Torre
An exceptional expression of Amarone, crafted from a blend of 60% Corvina, 35% Corvinone, and 5% Rondinella. This wine stands out for its intense and rich aromatic profile, shaped by meticulous aging in tonneaux and second-use barriques.
A deep ruby red in color, it captivates with an elegant bouquet of cherry, marasca cherry, delicate vanilla, and subtle spices. On the palate, the substantial tannic structure is beautifully balanced, delivering a long, persistent finish. Its ethereal freshness provides a distinctive edge over traditional Amarones, and its complexity will only deepen with bottle aging.
The 2019 vintage benefits from a mild winter and moderate summer, which helped develop excellent polyphenols and anthocyanins, contributing to the wine’s finesse and elegance.
This wine pairs beautifully with rich red meat dishes, particularly from Veronese cuisine, game, braised meats, and aged cheeses. It also complements the sweet-sour flavors of Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine, thanks to the raisined grape notes from the appassimento process. Serve at 18°C (64°F) in a large glass for optimal enjoyment.

Villa Della Torre has belonged to the Mastella Allegrini family since 2008. It was shaped by Giulio Romano and Michele Sanmicheli, who took inspiration from ancient Roman dwellings in their design. Today, the property includes an Art & Wine Relais and, since 2019, its own winery. This venture focuses on two regions known for winegrowing: Valpolicella Classica and Lugana. Valpolicella has long produced outstanding grapes, aided by limestone and volcanic soils, as well as breezes from nearby Lake Garda.
In Lugana, vines thrive under the moderating influence of Lake Garda. A dedicated team of agronomists and enologists oversees both zones, applying sustainable methods that uphold local biodiversity. Villa Della Torre is recognized as a place of hospitality surrounded by a rural panorama, and its wines balance a deep-rooted history with a forward-looking spirit, offering both finesse and complexity.
Near Fumane, the winery’s central vineyard forms a ring around the Renaissance villa, echoing the style of a French Château. The land is composed of eroded limestone-dolomitic layers, basalt, and deposits of glacial origin, each contributing different water-holding capacities throughout the growing season. The topsoil has notable Eocene calcareous clay, while deeper layers feature white and pale blue chalk and marl. Lying at roughly 200 meters above sea level, it was replanted in 2014 using the guyot system, with Corvinone in the forefront for its refinement and balance, backed by Corvina for spicy, mineral character and bright acidity.
At an elevation of 450 meters stands the Monte Lencisa vineyard, established in 2016 using the Pergola system. This choice shields vines from wildlife while maintaining harmony with the environment. The soil is strewn with pink stones typical of the Lessinia mountains, and Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella flourish there.
In the Lugana district of Desenzano del Garda, landscapes shaped by nature and human hands form a setting of rivers, moraine lakes, fields, and woodlands. The lake’s warmth softens winter temperatures, encouraging a variety of birdlife uncommon at these latitudes. Parts of the river valley remain untouched, with glacial hills that meet flatter terrain. This is where Villa Della Torre has expanded, offering wines that highlight the meeting point of tradition, land, and modern approaches.
