Description

Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico Riserva 2018 “Le Origini” by Bolla

The Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico Riserva 2018 “Le Origini” by Bolla captures the rich traditions of Valpolicella winemaking, reflecting the craftsmanship of a winery that first bottled Amarone in 1950 to honor its founder.

Grape Composition and Winemaking
Produced with a blend of 75% Corvina and Corvinone and 25% Rondinella, the grapes are carefully harvested from the high valleys of Marano and Negrar, where the pergola Veronese method is still used. After harvest, the grapes undergo a meticulous drying process for 120 days, concentrating their sugars and flavors.

Fermentation is slow and deliberate, lasting 25 days, with additional pre- and post-fermentative maceration. Aging takes place over four years: 12 months in 750-liter barrels, 36 months in larger oak casks, and 9 months of refinement in the bottle.

Tasting Profile
The wine showcases a deep garnet color with violet hues. Aromas of ripe cherries, plum preserves, and mature pear are enriched by notes of vanilla, licorice, and cedar. On the palate, it is full-bodied, smooth, and layered with flavors of red fruit jam, cocoa, and a touch of spice. The finish is long and balanced, with hints of balsamic complexity.

Food Pairing Suggestions
This Amarone complements a range of flavorful dishes, from grilled red meats like Fiorentina steak to braised beef and game. It pairs well with rich pasta dishes, such as tagliatelle with mushrooms or ragù di anatra, and aged hard cheeses. Its complexity also makes it a fine choice for quiet moments after a meal, shared with good company.

Serving Details
Serve at 20°C to fully appreciate its structure and aromas. With an alcohol content of 16%, this wine exemplifies the character and craftsmanship of the Valpolicella region.

About Bolla

Founded in 1883 by Alberto Bolla , the winery soon gained recognition when he began supplying local white wine to taverns in Soave, then expanded to Verona and Venice, where the family opened a restaurant in 1902. In the 1930s, Alberto’s oldest son Giorgio, an oenologist, drove a shift toward high-quality red wines, prompting the creation of the Pedemonte site in Valpolicella Classica . This facility produced Recioto, Valpolicella, and later Amarone, alongside the well-regarded Soave from the original cellar.

In the 1940s, Valpolicella was already known for appassimento wines, especially the sweet yet balanced Recioto. Occasionally, complete fermentation produced a dry outcome known as Amarone, which Alberto Bolla privately kept in what he called the Nonno cellar. Realizing its potential, Giorgio released the first “Amarone del Nonno” in 1950 as a special birthday gesture for Alberto. That bottling paved the way for Amarone’s global reputation as one of Verona’s most prized reds.

In 2006, Gruppo Italiano Vini purchased Bolla Winery to uphold the family’s emphasis on quality-driven processes, enthusiasm for winemaking, and respect for local growing areas.

Today, the estate encompasses over 300 hectares of vineyards in Valpolicella Classica, the Soave zone, and the Lake Garda region. A network of about 100 grape-growing families, collaborating across three generations, remains crucial in shaping wines that balance time-honoured methods with changing tastes.
