Vintage 2021
From the vintage reports of the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella
A changeable year that ended well: a dry September gave healthy grapes.
A changeable season with late flowering and a dry September that gave healthy grapes.
March was very dry; April and May brought about 210 mm, close to normal, and June almost none. July to September had about 200 mm, some 50 mm below the average. Flowering came about ten days late and veraison about nine days late. Downy mildew needed precise work in May and June, and powdery mildew caused modest damage in a few sensitive spots. Dry weather in September kept botrytis away, and picking began around 15 September.
The Valpolicella DOC Classico Superiore “Marta Galli” by Le Ragose
The Valpolicella DOC Classico Superiore “Marta Galli” is a structured and expressive wine that stands apart from traditional Valpolicella. Made from hand-harvested Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and other native varieties, the grapes are carefully selected in the vineyard and undergo a pre-drying process of 20 to 30 days. This step concentrates their flavors before fermentation, which takes place in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged for up to 36 months in new French oak barrels from Allier, Troncais, and Vosges, adding depth and refinement.
With a deep ruby color and lively purple reflections, it offers layered aromas of dried cherries, black licorice, wild herbs, and subtle oak spice, with hints of leather and underbrush. The palate is full-bodied and balanced, combining ripe fruit with fresh acidity and firm tannins, leading to a long and structured finish.
This wine pairs well with roasts in rich sauces, grilled meats, wild game, and aged cheeses, complementing their bold flavors. The vineyards, located on west-southwest-facing slopes, are planted on red and brown clay over Eocene limestone, contributing to the wine’s character. Best served at 18°C, “Marta Galli” is a striking example of Valpolicella’s depth and complexity.
Tasting notes reveal that the wine is intense, exceptionally powerful, and rich in tannins, with hints of black cherry. It is hot, strong, full, and velvety, with a pleasantly bitter taste, while also remaining elegant and well balanced.

Le Ragose sits at one of the highest points in Valpolicella, just north of Verona, where the vineyards rise above the fog line. This altitude, combined with excellent sunlight and low humidity, creates ideal conditions for grape varieties used in Amarone and Valpolicella, especially for the traditional appassimento drying process.
In 1969, enologists Arnaldo Galli and his wife Marta took over the abandoned 70-acre estate, drawn by the potential of its hillside terrain. Their focus was clear: working with nature, favoring elevation and drainage, and avoiding irrigation. The estate now includes 40 acres of terraced vineyards, planted on soils rich in clay, magnesium, calcium, and iron, with tufaceous rock below. The steep slopes mean all vineyard work is done manually, and the estate continues to rely exclusively on natural rainfall.
The Galli family has remained true to a balanced approach, respecting traditional methods while making thoughtful updates. The wines age primarily in large Slavonian oak casks, with occasional use of French tonneaux from Allier and Tronçais to support the wine without masking its character.
Marta Galli gained wide recognition for her influence in Valpolicella, earning the title “Wine Maker of the World” in 1990 for her role in restoring the area’s standing and supporting its DOC recognition. She also co-founded Le Donne del Vino, an international network of women in wine, and contributed to VIDE, an association of small, independent Italian producers.
Today, Le Ragose is run by Paolo and Marco Galli, together with Marta, Paolo’s daughter. Their approach continues to prioritize quality over quantity, with a strong emphasis on sustainability. Herbicides are no longer used, compost is made on-site, and pest control is managed with low-impact methods. The estate adheres to the National Integrated Production Quality System (SQNPI), which supports responsible farming practices.
Historical documents confirm grape growing on this land for over 400 years. With deep roots and a clear direction, Le Ragose continues to evolve, staying grounded in its values, respect for place, minimal impact on the environment, and producing wines that stay true to the character of Valpolicella.
